If you own FCS 2, have a closer look at Color, it offers more tools for this job. That said, it will never be easy with a recording format that is seriously degrading color information like DV or HDV.

I’ve observed one problem with “Capture Now” from the beginning (long before FCP 6, QT 7.3 or Leopard): If you grab a whole tape or large parts of it, capture now tends to loose audio sync where a batch capture doesn’t. My assumption is that FCP compares the number of audio samples with the TC after a batch capture and fixes it somehow, while capture now doesn’t.

Compressor does a decent job there, but it’s slooooow. You should give G Converter from Graeme Nattress a try.

ReSizer from Digital Anarchy is already up-to-date. It’s faster, but also more expensive than InstantHD. Give the demo a try, it’s definitely faster than Compressor.
But you may still want a Teranex -
If you don’t know Shake yet, it’s much easier to upgrade to FCS 2. You’ll get SmoothCam in FCP (and it works great!) plus Color, an excellent CC tool.

If it’s a short project (up to about 20 minutes), a standard burner and DVD-R will do the job, this is called a mini HD-DVD and most players out there can take it.
HD-DVD burners are very rare up to now, I’ve only seen one in an expensive Toshiba laptop.

No, there isn’t any other than AJA. The older version (SD only) is less pricey though.
Another way to go is a memory card based camera like Panasonix HV 200 (needs only a cheap adaptor for the cards on current laptops) or Sony’s new EX1.
