  • All of the above posts being said, all truth and true, here’s a bit of encouragement- it is possible to do effects for a movie with AE and PSD:

    Good luck!

Boujou or Syntheyes will do the trick for you, if you want to replicate the camera move in Maya and/or AE.
You may not need to go this far- if the camera movement is tracking or panning and the subject moves on parallel paths, Mocha will do, or even the AE native trackers.
AE is a compositing package- so yes, you can composite in AE.

As far as the production goes- if you can make sure that the people you need to track are visible at all times, and they have some distinct feature that can be used as a tracking point (a hat, a bag…). If you really want to get precise, use a thin stick with a ping pong ball attached on the upper end over their heads – it will mean a lot of roto work in post to hide the part of the stick that is not covered by the 3d objects.

Check out this tutorial from Eran Stern- you can use the same technique he uses for creating the disc layer to make your glowing squares.

you mean in the render queue? You can set up there whatever format… can you be more specific with your question?

September 8, 2010 at 6:40 pm in reply to: Counter-rotating circles

Create 1 dashed line circle shape in Illustrator- bring in AE and animate a 360 degree rotation (render out without last frame for a seamless loop) . Render that out with alpha. Bring in the rendered clip and check the loop option on import (give it a really high number). you have now a rotating circle that loops for the length of your project. Bring in comp this footage and draw a simple rectangular mask to reveal only half of circle. Duplicate layer. Invert mask. Change speed to -100%. You have the second half of the circle rotating in the other direction.

If you must export keyed footage from AE, best is to do it in an uncompressed format with Alpha- Animation codec will do, or tga/tiff. Just make sure you have the alpha option selected.

Why would you export keyed footage from a compositing program to a editing program??? Do your compositing in AE where you have much better control and options and then export the finished sequence to FC. Render out uncompressed for best quality.

September 6, 2010 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Parenting Null to Camera

Are you looking through the camera at the animation?
If you link a simple solid 3d layer to the Null, can you see that is affecting it?
Can you post a screen shot of your setup (opened layers- Null and camera)

  • It seems that in AE a precomp with 3D inside and the collapse transformation switch on keeps the 3d but not the cast shadows and other material options- it also looses the motion blur ability.
The workaround- for a cleaner comp- create your 3d structure in a separate comp, enable material properties, parent all to a Null, copy the whole thing and paste in your master comp. Enable “Shy” switch on all layers but the Null and turn hide shy layers on. You get one layer that controls all the 3d structure, all material properties and ability to cast shadows plus motion blur- hope it helps.

Check the Collapse Transformations/Continuously Rasterize switch on the Precomp layer for your 3d door.
