You need to check out some tutorials for keylight. It’s not just a matter of picking up the color with the color picker, but of adjusting the parameters of the plugin. Here’s some useful links:

Tools are tools- both AE and Avid have now excellent color correction tools. What makes the difference is the person using them. So use a colorist- but if you plan on doing it yourself, use the one you’re most familiar with.

Plus, compressing to mpeg2 from AE is not such a great idea- usually the DVD authoring software has the ability to compress the video files. Also, encoding apps like Adobe Media Encoder are designed to compress footge- so render out of AE using an uncompressed codec and then compress to mpeg2.

I think you can use just the stock AE plugins and get the same effect. There are in fact quite a few Q&A on this forum about this.

Post a few stills- it always helps to get answers faster. From what I understand now, it seems that you do not need to turn the light ball comp and make it 3D.

Use particular, create a triangular particle, set lights as emitter, make light follow path, draw a path for each letter and link one light to each path. Particles need to orient according to the path.

From what I understand you will export a final piece for the web, thus it does not matter if the final format supports alpha channels (unless you want your animation to overlap some other stuff on a website). Best format for web video- I prefer .f4v or.flv. Render out from AE in a lossless format (QT Animation mov)then use Adobe Media Encoder to compress.

If all of the above does not suit you, you can try Free Form to create the animation in AE. Use a match moving soft to track the camera move and export that to AE ( Boujou, Syntheyes or Vodoo- I think this one is free). Use Free Form to distort layers of newspaper images and animate them falling. Multiple passes needed.

I agree with Walter, however if you can’t seem to make it work render two passes (one with each image) and cut/fade in between when you need the change to happen.

Are you using OpenGL? If so, turn that off and try rendering again.
