It looks like a combination of the Toonit plugin and animated masks.

You can also use Curious from Vizrt ( or Vizrt World now)- that’s pretty fast and has tons of options.
    https://www.vizrt.com/products/viz_world/
    pretty expensive though…

“the viewing area is obviously smaller than 1920 x 1080.”
Obvious to you but not the rest of the world- what is the “viewing area”? What is your final output? Are you going to have a 16:9 format for output? Is it square pixel? Is your png file at the same PAR as the comp?
It’s maybe a matter that your footage is actually 1440×1080 and your preview in the comp window looks squashed?
A bit more information would help.

It looks like a 3d element, some sort of cylinder shape with a multi beveled edge. You could use Zaxwerks Invigorator to create such elements in AE.

November 26, 2010 at 5:01 pm in reply to: Creating a mask from a png photo

I’m a bit confused by your question, but if I get it right, then this is what you need to do:

Masking the logo- one way is to cut the logo in PSD and import the layer in AE. Another way is to cut a mask in AE itself.
I recommend the first version. This way you can use the logo layer (duplicate it) and apply track matte to the fire layer to get the fire to be inside the logo shape.

Expost as swf or as Flash project if you have CS5.

I disagree – I thinks it will work on footage as well as on a still. I saw commercials with talking animals done in Flame a few years ago using similar tools with what AE has now ( Mesh Warp, FreeForm, Tracking- Mocha). I think AE has the necessary tools for the job.

November 23, 2010 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Achieving this Effect

I have done virtual GUI effects in a few projects and I can tell you that there are a few ways of achieving that effect. If all you need is something similar to the commercial you posted then it’s quite easy-design a interface in AI, animate, add effects and composite in AE over your shot- you need to know exactly how you want the interface to work and coach the actor for the moves. Add a few spotlights on the actor that match the action on the GUImto give life to the action and there you have it. If you’re going for something more like this:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WcSPl76Vdg&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
then you need to plan everything really careful. Shoot chroma, place trackers to match the camera, plan light effects, choreograph the moves of the actor (a good storyboard would help, a simulated 3d storyboard would be best). Of course you need to track using Boujou/Syntheyes or the like, export camera move to AE, build a 3D interface in AE’s 3D space and composite.
Here’s a tutorial that may help:

You can shoot basic hand/finger gestures on chroma at a higher resolution to be able to have more of the hand in the frame and then position your moves and compensate animating the hand to start and end up where you need it to be. Of course you need to pay attention to lighting so that it matches the background.

November 16, 2010 at 8:19 pm in reply to: Morphing Green Screen

The quick and dirty way of morphing in AE is to use Mesh distort.
Overlap the layers by whatever number of frames you need the morph to happen (I would recommend a lower number of frames, thus a quick morph). Lower the top layers opacity to 50%. Keyframe the distortion mesh at the beginning of the transition and go to the last frame- distort to fit the bottom layer. Apply Mesh warp to the bottom layer- keyframe at the last frame of the transition, then move to the first frame of the transition and distort the bottom layer to match the top one. Animate top layer opacity from 100% to 0% for the length of the transition and you’ve got yourself a simple morph.
You will have to tweak the mesh rows/columns and the way the different parts of the frame are distorted to see what works best.

As far as my experience with Rotobrush goes I do not think AE erases the data, I worked on 10-15sec clips with no problems- like Dave said it may just be a RAM issue.
