Here’s a way of dealing with it (link below for AE project in CS4 that uses only standard plugins)- of course you will have to animate the mask around the subject, but since it’s a garbage mask it should be a breeze and if the subject does not move too much you may just leave that in place as is.

Also, Mesh Warp, Bezier Warp, good parenting and Anchor Point positioning together with good old AE animation can do a lot. Here’s an example:

If you need the particles at the emitter to stay the same I think you may need two particular layers. One with just one frame of emission and then 0 emission for the rest of the shot, the other constantly emitting. Hope this is clear enough.

AE has some preset effects for “Bad TV” (type that in the Effects window). You can start by using that- of course you will need a lot of tweaking.

Since it is a static shot it is not that hard. You can create a still plate in PSD as you were thinking and color the van there. You might as well cut out the parts of the van that will change color and create a layer with just those elements. Then you can import that layer in AE and reveal the color with an animated mask as your friend passes by. To make it look more realistic you will need to do some rotoscoping to cut the shape of your friend as he moves over the color so that he and the hose can come on top of the color plate. Also adding a spray coming out of the sprayer would help- Trapcode Particular can be used.

To be kind – a video link is just that, a video link. What you think that video link presents may be different for us- all I see is an 80’s tv show… so if you want help put in the time and be more specific- is it the 80’s look (the way the video looks, crappy), or something else we missed after the first few seconds of watching- without a specific time reference no one will watch a long piece to try and figure out what you are referring to.

If I understand correctly you are trying to animate the layer order- I do not think AE does that. My way of achieving what I think you’re after would be to create several comps with different layer orders (one comp per combination) and then either render them out and use a editing app like Premiere or FCP to cut the 1sec segments from each combination and mix them, or do basically the same thing in AE but end up with a ton of precomps trimmed to one sec.

My understanding is that reload works on a path that already exists- so if you changed something to your source file externally and AE does not automatically update, you hit reload and it updates the file. With missing files the path is broken so reload will not work. Replace does the trick in this situation as you mentioned.
