What version of Particular are you using? To my knowledge only v2 has that option, so if you’re on a previous one you can look long and hard for it and you won’t find one.
Here’s a link to a great tutorial that describes the option in Particular 2:

Never used pfHoe so I can not say, all I know is that Camera Tracker worked like a charm on some clips where Boujou had trouble producing a decent camera solve.

If you want a background plate where the perspective changes you need a camera tracker (I have used the Camera Tracker Plugin from the Foundry in AE and got really good results. I have used Boujou as well, but that’s a lot more expensive). Once you have a camera in AE that matches the camera from the shot, you can build a background plate in layers in AE 3D space, setting the layers in z space far enough from each other to get a change of perspective. If you want to get really in depth and have a volumetric plate and not just 2d planes in 3d space, you can use Free Form to displace in 3d using depth maps like in this tutorial, or even Zaxwerks invigorator Pro to create/import a true 3d setup to use in the background.

I did a quick test- you find the project link below. I used the file you posted and Colorista. I spent quite a few nights with a colorist working on grading and stealing the tips of her trade. One thing I learned is to go for a look and disregard things like “the skin tones need to look realistic”. Color grading pushes the natural look into a artistic convention… I think the problem with your test was that you did not push the skintones more and you flattened the background in one color instead of tinting it and providing some depth with masks.

You can export a frame, create a patch in PSD and import that in AE back. (feather the edges). Track using Mocha – plenty of tutorials out there. Comp the patch over the background – apply track data and match grain.

Maybe AE 6.5 needs to run in legacy mode

CS5 should be able to open all your 6.5 projects as long as you have all the plugins used in the original project.

Fun- I can only imagine the work behind the transitions to color, looks really good!

  • I never had luck with Dynamic link, so I am always importing sequences from AE. CS5 may have fixed the issues though.

  • AE has plugins that are designed for color grading. My favorite is the Magic Bullet Suite. With Looks and Mojo you can generate instant grading by using the presets. Colorista is for a more in depth grading process.
Also, AE comes with Synthetic Apreture. Here’s some tutorials on the Cow.

There are various stock footage libraries out there- google search will help.
As far as AE goes you can try using Particular , but I think Particle Illusion may help- you get quite a few presets there for fire.
Also there’s a way of creating fire with Particle Playground.
