Render the key first with alpha and then apply echospace to the rendered footage.

You can scan the drawings, clean them up in PSD and then vectorize the in AI. The automatic process needs a bit of trial and error but you can get some really good results. Also. depending on the type of drawing you use, you may want to draw just the lines and scan them, then turn that to vectors and color in AI.

Roland’s idea sounds good- you can definitely do different colors in Text.

All you need is to create a sphere and use the same image you used with CC Sphere as a texture.

One way of making the lines different colors (gradients not solid) is to use your animation as a track matte for a solid on which you apply 4color gradient.I don’t know if you can do each piece a single solid color using your workflow. It can work with a particle system like Particular.

It’s called color grading and it’s an art in itself. For the examples you gave there where hours and hours of hard work and immense computing power in systems like Davinci, plus the eye of a highly trained colorist.
However, Colorista from Red Giant can achieve pretty good results (as can Synthetic Apreture, but I’m a Colorista user/fan). Here’s a link to some tutorials that can help:

Not being able to see your footage it makes it hard to say- my gut feeling is that the laser point may be moving too fast for any tracking to be of use, that’s why I suggested the method in my initial post.

H264 is a good codec for final delivery/playback and not for fx work. Best option is transcoding to a lossless format even if you get huge file sizes.
