Compressor also supports 640x whatever sized iPod exports, there’s just not a preset for it yet.

I simply duplicated the existing preset and went to the Encoder tab in the Inspector, clicked one button to switch to 640(VGA) size, and saved that as a new preset.

  • You don’t want to route your audio to output 3&4 if your device only has 2 channel output. It will never see 3&4.

You want to mute the stuff you already sent in the first pass, then send your new mix to channels 3&4 on the deck by moving the cables.

Tech support is right. It shouldn’t be an issue, as I have mine in between my G5 and a DVCPro deck with no issues.

Wait, I just reread your post. Your DV audio is getting into the computer, but you just can’t hear it through the 1082? Run your analog outputs from the DV deck into 7&8 of the mixer.

If you insert your chapter markers in FCP, export a reference movie. Bring that into Compressor. Choose your DVD settings for your DVD, then add a iPod export setting as well. You’ll get an h.264 mp4 with chapter markers.

September 15, 2006 at 2:02 am in reply to: Quality Audio Mixer for offline final cut pro edit

The Tascam FW-1082 is a great mixer, and has become an indispensible part of my edit system. I originally bought it to do some location audio recording, and it had the added perk of controlling FCP when I was done with it.

I haven’t bothered yet to program the extra controls. Frankly, having transport controls, jog/shuttle wheel, and audio channel controls like solo/mute and the automated faders is all I really need.

Once you get it set up, the thing just works. It takes a bit to get everything to mesh with it properly, but once it’s set up, it rocks.

    Highly recommended here!

September 6, 2006 at 1:48 am in reply to: Synching 5.1 sound

Your best bet is to lock your picture and then send the audio facility your finished stereo track and have them recreate the 5.1 file synced to it.

You could have them send you the 5.1 channels as individual files, sync them in the timeline and export each new edited channel file back out separately, but when it comes to encoding the final .ac3, I like to let the audio facility handle it to ensure it meets Dolby specs for certification and logo use.

There are alot of little nuances when it comes to properly encoding a 5.1 file, ESPECIALLY music. I prefer to leave it to the experts.

August 9, 2006 at 2:51 pm in reply to: Error: out of memory

1.5GB of RAM is really not enough to run FCP. Consider how much of it OSX is using, then see how much is left over for FCP.

That being said, Out Of Memory errors usually point to corrupt files. Shut down FCP, eject your LaCie and restart FCP. All your media should now be offline. Begin reconnecting clips one by one until you find one that gives you the error (and keep going after you find that one, because there may be multiple corrupt clips).

    Other possible causes:

    CMYK graphics files
.psds with an empty layer (tends to be a memory soak)

August 9, 2006 at 12:31 am in reply to: More than 12dB of gain with audio?

True, but take that same footage that you didn’t have anything to do with acquisition into the most professional audio recording studio in the world, and their mixer is still only going to crank it up about 12db. Beyond that, you’ll have to run it through a compressor or re-amp it to bring up the level.

    What do you mean, workaround?

    A) If the audio was recorded at proper levels in the first place, the OP wouldn’t have to raise the level more than 12db.

    B) That gain filter? It’s on the mixer/camera. Shouldn’t need it in FCP.

If Apple sat around and wrote code to correct all of the F-ups that people make in the field, we’d still be on version 1. Want to avoid all these workarounds? DO IT RIGHT IN THE FIELD.

I’m about to expand into the office space next to mine in the next couple months, and it comes complete with an old walk in safe! And the coolest thing is, it stays cool! I was in there measuring today and the AC was off. Hotter than **!!. Open the safe door and walk in, about 60 degrees!

    Nice little perk…Fireproof, lockable, etc.
