I am working on a 96 minute movie with many layers and files (both video and audio). I keep getting error messages that force me to quit and reopen the project.

The messages include: “Error: out of memeory” “General Error” and “Could not open handler. System memory is probably low.”

I am running a dual 2.5 GHz G5 with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM (which I think is plenty of memory). The media is on a 4-month-old Lacie Terrabyte.

I have tried resetting preferences, running only FC, and re-rendering everything; but I continue to get the errors every few hours. Any thoughts on what to do?

Sometimes Out of Memory errors are referring to virtual memory, which really means that your hard drives are getting too full.

How full are ALL drives connected to the computer? The general rule is that no drive should be over 90% full, and many strongly suggest you keep up to 20% free when working with large video files.

1.5GB of RAM is really not enough to run FCP. Consider how much of it OSX is using, then see how much is left over for FCP.

That being said, Out Of Memory errors usually point to corrupt files. Shut down FCP, eject your LaCie and restart FCP. All your media should now be offline. Begin reconnecting clips one by one until you find one that gives you the error (and keep going after you find that one, because there may be multiple corrupt clips).

    Other possible causes:

    CMYK graphics files
.psds with an empty layer (tends to be a memory soak)
