I answered you in the FCP forum. If you have DiskWarrior, it seems to help, on occasion, to run it more than once. I’d also try using a cache cleaner application like CockTail, Tiger Cache Cleaner or Cache Out X: https://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?PHPSESSID=19334706b5a11f007fad6dd380ffb145&mode=basic&action=search&str=cache&plt%5B%5D=macosx&x=17&y=3

Startup off your OS X installer disk and see if the problems are still there. If not, its clearly a software problem (likely) and you should try reinstalling your OS Software. An “Archive and Install” would probably be fine. Using an application like Cocktail to clean you caches would be a good idea as well. While started off of the installer disk, be sure to run Disk Utility to repair the drives and the preferences (If you have DiskWarrior, run it – twice).
If the problem remains after starting up off of the installer disk, then disconnect all peripheral devices and 3rd party hardware to see if the problem is related to those items.
Hope that helps,

August 25, 2005 at 11:04 pm in reply to: Upgrading from 10.2 to 10.3: Do I have to reinstall software? You do have to buy the update, it’s not free, but it will upgrade your software to 10.3 (or 10.4 if you buy the latest) without you having to reinstall your applications software. You’ll want to run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior) and repair your permissions on your drive before and after doing the update. Just because your applications are still there, doesn’t mean they are compatible with the new OS. You’ll want to check with the manufacturers to see if they have any required updates. Also, do the Apple software updater after installing to see if Apple has released any minor updates as well.

P.S. Many people prefer backing up their current drive (always a good idea – either way) and then wiping the drive and reinstalling everything from scratch. It is not required, but makes for a cleaner system with a lower chance of problems occurring. Up to you which way you go. I’ve had good luck both ways.

Repair your permissions, delete your FCP & Motion preferences and cache’s. Repair your the drives using DiskWarror (or at least Disk Utility). Check to make sure you have the latest firmware, drivers, etc for all your video hardware (video card, RAID, etc). Make sure you have downloaded any updates to software applications as needed.

10% is probably cutting too close. 15-20% would a be more realistic minimum.

Maybe I’m missing something? If you keep your blacks at or above zero in FCP, they should be at 7.5 or above on output, if you’re using analog outputs on the Io. Of course, if your scope says something different, then you need to adjust accordingly any problem areas in FCP before outputting. Most likely you have some blacks below zero in your FCP project.
