  • I can’t believe how elegant FCP 5 is!

I’ve fooled around with FCP for a few years, but my main editing program has always been Media 100. Recently I decided to buckle down and really learn Final Cut Pro. I am amazed at how clever and elegant the program is. 🙂

In my Media 100 days it was always, which program am I going to do this effect in. Now you can do so much in FCP compared to Media 100.

Media 100 was simply the video editor for After Effects users. 🙂

I would say it’s more like iMovie for producers.

(short rant, do not read if you want to defend FCP.)
I’ll never look back at terminating our expensive relationship with those rat bastards at Media 100 company but there is a long list of stuff I wish FCP did half as elegantly as Media 100.
Here’s one: Take a look at the Viewer. The set i/o buttons and go-to buttons are at opposite sides of the window, as far apart as possible. That’s stupid.
Here’s another: Look at all four of the time readouts in the Viewer. They are in the four corners, as far apart as possible, and they’re little itty bitty numbers with meaningless clock icons. Bad design.
Wait, I’m on a roll: Media 100 was smart enough to know when you were using the number keypad that you were controlling the deck or clip playback. FCP thinks you’re entering text unless you specifically click into the the movie. Lame.
How about the list of feedback M100 gives you when capturing?
Last one: In m100, when a partial clip was created from a longer clip and you opened the partial clip, the timeline in the viewing window scaled to the length of the clip. Say you have a 10 minute clip and you pull ten seconds from it. In m100, you’d see the ten second portion which meant you could actually edit in the viewing window. In FCP, you see the entire clip’s boundaries making it impossible to fine tune within only the ten seconds you’ve selected. (I assume I still haven’t figured out subclips in FCP.)

AutoSelect, destination patch, scrolling timeline … long freakin’ list of sour grapes.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

How about a simple updating timeline CTI like M100 had ?
Lot’s of Love for FCP but there is room for improvement.

Hey… if FCP were perfect, Apple wouldn’t have anything to do except bulid computers. I’m an old Media100 guy myself and yes, there are features of M100 that I liked too that aren’t in FCP. BUT… there are many, many more features that FCP offers over M100. If we as editors keep expressing our opinions about products to these companies, they will eventually incorporate these features into their products. I’d like to see a way to print out my Browser window for my records but I can live without it. Hey guys… can M100 edit on muitple video tracks (more than 2)? Can you composite your video right on your timeline in M100? Can you import Photoshoop files with layers into multiple video tracks? NOPE! Media100 had a time and purpose. That time is now gone, so let’s get on with business in the real world of FCP.

I use this link on a regular basis. I was told by one of the guys who writes the code for FCP that they do go by the requests recieved for changes and add-ons for FCP. Post your requests at this link, the more requests they get the more likely we will get the features we all want.

Okay, so I’m by no definition a seasoned FCP user, I love the program. If I can’t get something to work, it’s usually because I don’t know how to do it yet. But I’m totally dumbfounded at a very basic missing component that I can say I’m almost 100% is not there. Why is there not an overlaying template for screening information and a simple printable log? I’m talking about something that takes timecode, marker information (from the track layers and from the top of the timeline), notes, and other slate information that might be important for providing screening details to others outside of the editing bay. It seems rediculous that to put out an acceptable screener, you have to burn the timecode in, mark & describe the scenes and takes, re-type that info to create a text layer so the marker descriptions can be taken to dvd, then turn the marked clips into subclips so you can export a batch list which has to then be brought into Excel and formated to create a paper log of the screener…did I miss anything? I’ve heard Avid does this all for you, but I can’t say for sure becuase I don’t know it. FCP people, if you’re listening, please look into this.
