CONCLUSIONS
The Maxtor MaXLine III 300GB is the overall fastest single 7200RPM Serial ATA drive you can buy. It was fastest in 5 out of 7 tests. The DiamondMax 10 sibling of the MaXLine III is just as fast, but only comes with a shorter warranty (3 years vs 5 years). If I had to pick one 7200rpm drive for my G5 Power Mac, the MaXLine III would be it.The Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400GB came scored first in the two ZoneBench READ tests and came in second on the Finder Duplicate test. It also had one other distinct advantage over the MaXLine. At the 270MB mark (or 90% of its capacity), the Maxtor MaXLine was running at 40MB/s. At that same 270GB mark, the Seagate was running at over 50MB/s.
The Hitachi Deskstar 7K500 came in second on the Photoshop Rotate test and beat the MaXLine in the ZoneBench test at the 270GB mark, but was third or fourth in the other tests. Its main strength is its half terabyte capacity. Though it has a 16MB internal cache (just like the MaXLine III), that didn’t seem to help it keep up with the MaXLine III, the only other drive with 16MB buffer.
The Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 250GB SATA II is a not a slow drive. It’s just not as fast as the others tested.
Though the Western Digital Raptor 10,000RPM drive was included in the graphs, it’s a little unfair. It has much less storage than the others (74GB) and runs at a much higher RPM (10,000). It’s really a different “animal.” Yet readers have indicated that it is on their shopping list for a G5 boot drive. If you don’t feel restricted by the limited capacity, it’s a really fast drive… especially if you have it connected to the Firmtek PCI-X host adapter. But it’s a noisy devil.

I agree with Walter, its really nice to have a Breakout Box to plug into instead of a bunch of cables hanging off your card. The Io or Io LA would be a really nice choice. Also, if you want to go with a card (some advantages), you should take a look at the AJA Kona LS with K-Box. With the Kona LS/K-Box combo you get a card and an analog breakout box. Of course, the advantage of the Io is its portability (as Walter mentioned) between systems, and its compatibility with the AJA Kona 2 HD card.
Even though I prefer the AJA products personally, if you go with the BlackMagic offerings you’ll do fine. Both companies have some very nice products. Do your research and decide which one has the features you need/want most. I suggest reading both AJA forums and the BlackMagic forum here on Cow to get some insights. Visits AJA and BlackMagic’s websites to learn even more.

Classic should still work fine in OS X v10.4.2 (Tiger). However, make an effort to find them new, replacement applications as soon as possible. They are living in the past and tech-support on very old systems/software is a nightmare.
Just about every new Mac shipped requires the current OS at the time of its release. So no, you won’t be able to run an older version of OS X on a new G5.

Try going to your Preferences > International > Input Menu and changing the keyboard layout to U.S. Then restart After Effects. AE doesn’t like non-american keyboards for shortcuts.

Did you upgrade to QuickTime 7 Pro? Have you tried deleting the FCP preferences and caches? A likely problem is that the original media has been moved, renamed or deleted. Try a search in the FCP forum to see if anyone else is having a similar problem. My systems don’t seem to have that problem, so I don’t think it directly has to do with QT 7, FCP 5, or Tiger.

I prefer using Flip4Mac so I can get all the control of using QuickTime by playing wmv files directly in it. https://www.flip4mac.com/
However, Window’s Media Player works fine for me in OS X v10.4.2 Tiger. Not sure why you are having a problem downloading it.

Hi Mike, here’s a couple of things to try (OK, a bunch of things):
1 Unplug any other peripherals or attached devices (including internal PCI cards)
2 If the device requires external power, make sure it is plugged
in to a working power outlet and all connectors are securely plugged in. Also, make sure the device is started and running (give it a few seconds to spin up) before plugging it into your Mac.3 Check that the FireWire device is listed in Apple System
Profiler (the ports are likely good if you see you device listed)4 Check the FireWire device documentation to see if additional
drivers are required. If so, reinstall them with the latest versions. Also, check for any Firmware updates available for your device (very important).5 Check for broken pins, dust, dirt, or wear on both FireWire
cable connectors, the device FireWire port, and the computer
FireWire port.6 Connect the FireWire device to another FireWire port on another
computer (if possible) to confirm its working.7. Try plugging in a Firewire cable between it another computer, then start the second computer up in Target Disk Mode.
8. Try starting up off of a different (known good) drive or cd/dvd to eliminate any possible software issues.
9. Try shutting down your Mac, unplugging it, waiting 5 seconds or so and then plug it back in and restart.
10. Try resetting the PMU (instructions for Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics/Gigabit Ethernet):
Shutdown and unplug your Mac (wait for it to cool-down so you won’t burn yourself on any hot parts)
Press the PMU reset switch (S1) once on the logic board. Do not press the PMU reset switch a second time because it could stop the PMU chip from responding (crash the PMU). ( PMU location – https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95035 )
Wait ten seconds before connecting the power cord and turning the computer on.
Some of these are official Apple solutions, while others are things I’ve seen work over the years. If none of them work or point you to a solution, then you may have a bad logic board and you’ll need to take it to an Apple authorized service center for repair.

It depends on what capture settings/codec’s you are trying to capture to. Your best bet it to talk to the Ambrosia directly about what they recommend computer/hardware-wise for what you are attempting. Off the top of my head, I’d say you’d want at least a G5 Dual 2 GHZ. You’ll want to install a second (fast) SATA drive to capture your video clips to and a faster graphics card like an ATI x800/x850 or nVidia 6800. You can probably find a refurb or used one for a reasonable price? Amborosia knows their products requirements best, so speak to them and buy something at least two or three steps better than what they say is the minimum recommended system.
