It can’t find a startup drive/OS. Something got corrupted (most likely) or the startup drive has failed.

I would startup off of the the installer disks that came with your Mac. You can then try repairing your startup drive using Disk Utility (found on the installer disk pull down menu).

If that doesn’t fix the problem (try restarting again of the internal drive after repair) just start up off of the installer disks again and do an “archive and install” to replace your existing OS with a clean install (you will need to run all the updates again afterwards). Be sure to turn on the options in the Archive and Install options to save your files, users, etc (can’t remember the exact terminology).

Its always a good idea to repair your permissions and repair the drives (using Disk Utility or a 3rd party application like Disk Warrior) before and after running any major software updates and/or every month or so, to help prevent problems from occurring in the future.

Apple posted a solution to this problem. It has to do with old themes and offers a fairly easy fix.

iDVD ’08: The application may unexpectedly quit when opened for the first time
    Issue

iDVD ’08 may unexpectedly quit when opened for the first time, after installation.

    Affected products:

    iDVD ’08
    Solution

Have your iLife ’08 installation disc nearby before performing the following steps.

Erase the following folders from your hard drive:
    /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 1
    /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 2
    /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 3
    /Library/Application Support/iDVD/Themes/iDVD 4

Erase the following folder from your home directory:
    ~/Library/Application Support/iDVD/Installed Themes
Note: The tilde (~) represents your home directory.

    Reopen iDVD ’08.
    To Reinstall Themes 1-4:

Open iDVD ’08 and open a project.
    Click Themes.
From the Themes drop-down menu, choose Old Themes.
Select any of the faded-out theme thumbnails.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install all of the themes originally erased via Software Update or the iLife ’08 installation process.

I hope that helps you and anyone else experiencing this problem (happened to me as well).

    Hey Paul,

Assuming you don’t have any other Firewire devices connected to your Mac, and that you don’t have any conflicting codecs/drivers installed (avid, blackmagic, etc), I would say its likely you have just configured the control panel or Io capture setting incorrectly. I would suggest a quick call to AJA’s wonderful tech-support so they can help you identify the problem and hopefully give you a quick/easy solution to it.

Oh, a couple of things that you should check as well:

Make sure these two items are not true:

April 27, 2007 at 9:34 pm in reply to: S cable into AJA io OR just go firewire directly?

    Hey David,

OK, let’s be real here. If you’re using a VX2000 and a MacBook (not MacBook Pro), preserving the highest quality of the image possible is NOT crucial, and budget is a HUGE issue.

You can’t add a capture card to a MacBook. You can’t add any SATA or Fibre channel external hard drives to capture to (no card slot in a MacBook). The only thing you can add is a Fire Wire external drive and it can conflict with the Io which is also using the FW bus (you may have some success with this however, search the posts here and on the FCP forums – but its not recommended).

So the reality for you (unless you upgrade your equipment – Pro series Mac, Fast hard drives, etc), is that in your case I recommend you just capture through Firewire directly (unless your camera/deck has component or SDI (probably not S) video out, then capture through to Io).

If you capture directly to your MacBook through it’s own Firewire port, then you may need to disconnect your Io while capturing. Then reconnect it afterwards, so you can use it to connect your external monitor and decks.

The video you capture will look good (considering the camera/source) and will likely be more than acceptable for your needs

    Hi Paul,

No matter what hardware you buy and connect to you Mac you always (ALWAYS) want to go to the developers website and download the latest drivers, etc. As a rule of thumb, never use the ones that come on a disk with your product (including the Io) without checking for newer versions on their website first.

Here’s the link to download the latest versions: https://www.aja.com/html/support_Io_swd.html
