I am not really understanding what is happening when you try to start up off the CD. However, if you startup off of the OS X installer disk, by holding down the “C” key, immediately after hearing the startup sound, you will get the OS X install window. You’ll also get additional options from the pulldown menus at the top. If your Mac does not startup (to the install window) from the installer disk, then you may not be using the installer disk that came with that Mac (ones from other Mac models will not work most of the time). If the disk is damaged or you’ve chosen a disk other than the installer disk, then that could also be your problem. Finally, you could try unplugging any peripherals devices attached to your Mac to confirm they are not interfering.

Hi Todd,
Widgets will install themselves automatically when you download them unless you don’t have the “Open ‘safe’ files after downloading” checkbox selected in Safari preferences. If for some reason you want to leave that preference disabled, then you have two options.

Try clicking on the desktop before switching to a different application that also uses the Io’s video outputs.

Your capture settings (the clips codec, size, etc) probably don’t match your sequence settings exactly.

Have iTunes import them from the CDs as .aiff files instead of .aac (the option is in the iTunes preferences). You could also burn the ones in iTunes now to a music cd and then reimport them iTunes as .aiff.

Hi Aaron,
Yeah, just boot off of the installer disk and run Disk Utility from the pull down menu (instead of the installer) to repair the drive and the preferences. If Disk Utility finds and fixes problems, run it again until it finds no further problems. If Disk Utility is opening and working, your hardware is likely fine as it is an application and you are started up. After running and repairing your drive, reboot and see if all is well. If not, restart again off the installer disk and just do an “Archive and Install.” Be sure to select the options to save your user files and applications, unless you want to reinstall everything again and have backups. Also, its a good idea to unplug any peripherals and 3rd party hardware while troubleshooting as that is another source of potential problems.

What do you mean by large files? Flip4Mac limits its trial versions to 30 seconds I believe. With the full version you should be able to bring the wmv files into FCP, Compressor, Quicktime, etc and export them to whatever you want unless you are having some sort of conflict or a space/memory issue. You might want to check with the Flip4Mac people incase there is some issue I’m not aware of, but it should work.

15-20% of the available space after formatting the drive is a good general rule. Nothing is written in stone and you may get away with less free space. Would I risk it for any length of time? Probably not, unless I wanted to add another troubleshooting step to eliminate when next issue arrives. Here’s a quote by Larry Jordan on Ken Stones excellent website:
“1) Make sure your hard disks are never more than 85% full. Hard disks need lots of room to create temporary files. If a hard disk gets too full, it can lock up and prevent both writing and reading data. Go to Final Cut Pro -> System Settings -> Scratch disks and set the “Minimum Allowable Free Space On Scratch Disks” equal to 15% of your largest hard disk.”
