I can’t ignore that question.

If you’ve trashed the preferences and this is still happening, the usual cause is a corrupted font. Unfortunately these are hard to find. One way is to use the FontBook application, thin out your font list so it’s only the basic fonts and see if the application will load. Also in the font list in your system (or user) see if there are any fonts with generic icons. These are often corrupt fonts. Remove them from the folder and see if the application loads properly without them.

You have to install it from the install disc. Run the installer again and make sure it’s turned on.

I’ll answer the last question. Make sure the drive is connected and mounted on the computer before you launch the application. If you don’t the clips will be offline.

As to all the other questions, maybe someone else can help you, but I can’t teach you how to use the application in a forum message. You could start with the manual, but that’s a bit long, though it does have pretty good search features. There are some books and DVD and other instructional material that will get you up to speed pretty quickly.

Because a freeze frame can be made up of multiple layers composited together there is no way for the application to call up a source file.

You can’t have zero pre-roll. Most decks will need at least three seconds maybe more of pre-roll and a couple of seconds post-roll. You need to reset your marked I/O if they’re too close to timecode breaks.

For the price FCE is an excellent editing solution for those formats. It has all the editing functionality that FCP has, all the overlay functions and all the trim functions. Obviously there’s a lot more that FCS can do, but it is four times the cost. If you want to edit DV or HDV you’ve be perfectly capable of editing your material with great precision and flexibility in FCE.
