PSD files in FCP
Posted by Needs Realname update on May 26, 2006 at 2:54 pmWhy does FCP read my photoshop PSD files as sequences? I have about 300 subtitle plates made as PSD and cant work them properly in Final Cut.

Because that’s how it works. It retains all layers from Photoshop which is a really good thing. In my case, I’ll create all my lower thirds for a project in a single photoshop file, each on its own layer. Then when I open that up in FCP, I just put that sequence off the side so I can just grab each graphic off the video tracks as needed.
If you’re creating single layer photoshop files, just save them off as a PNG or JPEG or TIF or other such file and then they will show up as a single layer graphic.

May 26, 2006 at 4:17 pmThis is the way FCP allows compatability with Photoshop – and very handy it is too!
If you need to put a caption onto your timeline, just drag the imported sequence to V2 (etc) exactly as you would a clip. Sequences are just nested clips as far as FCP goes, so you should have no problems.
Occasionally I have had transparancy issues with PS projects in FCP, in which case you may need to try exporting from PS in a different format – although JPEGs do not support transparancy. Only a couple of gfx file-types do, the most common being Targas (.tga).
Finally, you can always open the sequence and copy and paste the layers you need – a little more time-consuming, I’m sure.

May 26, 2006 at 7:17 pmYes, this is the way I do it too, very handy and you get guaranteed transparency on each layer. My only beef is that the layer names do not come over into FCP which is totally annoying. Thakfully though, double clicking the layer into the viewer lets you know what the heck you’re working with, but if the layer names could be preserved (like in AE!) that would be great.
Have a wonderful day.

FCP 5, but never seen this behavior, what could I be missing? My layers come over with just the name of the sequence.
Have a wonderful day.

Absolutely the same thing here. When you bring in any layer from your Photoshop Sequence it’s just given the name of the original Sequence and not just the layer name.
Does the same thing when you nest two photoshop layers together. It’ll just create a nest of the same name as the Sequence in the Browser. The nest name in the actual Sequence is correct, but not in the browser.
I’ve been complaining about this via “feedback” forms pretty much since FCP 5 came out.

May 26, 2006 at 11:58 pmPerhaps my understanding of English is different, but when someone says “the layer names do not come over into FCP” that means the layer names are not being imported in FCP. This completely not the behavior I’m seeing. When you open the PSD sequence that you’ve imported into FCP the layer names are indeed preserved. I think what you’re talking about something else, which may be what Chris is talking about, but not what he wrote.

May 27, 2006 at 12:57 pmSorry if I was not clear, here’s what I’m getting. Let’s say I make a PS doc called “titles.” It has say, 10 layers, each named something different, like “Opening,” “Middle.” etc. When I bring the doc into FCP it is a sequence called “titles'” and all the layer names are gone. Does this make sense?
Have a wonderful day.
