This is an interesting issue.
About two weeks ago, I installed my copy of FCP 5 on my Powerbook to enable me to continue working on a project while on the road. I copied my files from my desktop machine to a small Firewire drive. and copied the project file to the PB with a jumpdrive. When I went to reconnect the media, I ran into the same problem…only this was with FCP5. There is a thread a few weeks ago about the problem but it sounds exactly like the above problem. I had to reconnect the files one at a time. I had around 350 clips…one at a time was not an option. I ended up reinstalling FCP and everyting worked just fine after that.
Maybe something else has changed somewhere and it’s not just a problem with FCP6?

Ditto here. I thought it was just my system acting up at first but it seems that many people are reporting this. Must be a feature…

I use a Wacom Graphire tablet to largely replace my mouse. I find that it’s a lot faster (to me) than a mouse and I can edit all day without any serious physical side effects. Plus it’s handy in programs like Photoshop as well. My 2

FWIW, I did a clean install of FCP (only) and ran all of the online software updates and the files are reconnecting as they should be. I haven’t had a lot ot time to play with it today since I’m working under deadline, but it seems, at first glance, to be working.
Knock on wood. More later as time permits…

Interesting.
This was a fresh install from the DVD. After installing I went on-line to do all the usual updates before launching the program. Maybe, with all the updates Apple has been pumping out lately, something is broken?

I’m in production right now, but I’ll give it a go tonight. I didn’t remember if you were given the option of doing a custom install or not last time when I installed FCP 5.
I never like having all that downtime while traveling. Powerbook and both batteries going into the bag. Must be productive and all that.

If the original tapes are still on Hi-8, just digitize them via Y/C input to your card. Just don’t connect the “C” component of the signal.Alternately, you might be able to connect the “Y” signal to a composite input. It depends in whether you card will be looking for color burst information on the input. All of the luminance information should be on the “Y” channel of the signal. In essence you will be capturing in black & white. This should effectively eliminate all of the chroma information and give you a nice clean video without any nasty NTSC encoded video artifacts.
I’ve never needed to do it and I’m not sure it will work with your setup but I should be worth a try.

Actually I was referring to the loss of quality when going from an 8-bit UC timeline in FCP down to an .mpg file for use by the cable company.

We are having the same issues with the delivery of our local spots. Although (for now) TV stations in our area are still taking tapes, the Time Warner systems are all now requesting .mpg files for their servers. It’s become somewhat of a pain in the patootie for everyone here. The Avid Symphonys can’t do it and the FCP systems can but it’s a pain to loose all that quality. And then there is the time it takes to send the files (right now they are all Quicktimes) to them via their FTP site…which keeps changing locations as well as they cut back and consolidate resources.
Is there a way to mux the video and audio streams right within Compressor?
Inquiring minds want to know.

This is noise definitely being generated by the Mac itself. The noise will change as windows are opened or the cursor is moved across the screen or whatever. Cables are all shielded although the output is still unbalanced. I’ll continue to muck around with it this weekend.
