  • Problems reconnecting media on a PB

OK, as stated in the post a few lines below, I loaded FCP (only) onto my PB laptop to allow me to continue offlining a project while on the road. So far so good. I then copied my media to an external FW drive. Connected it to the PB, reconnected the media and all was good…right up to the point where the brand new Lacie drive took a dump. This one lasted only about an hour before dying, but that’s the subject for another rant later when I have the time.
I copied the media to yet another FW drive. I connected it to the PB, loaded the FCP project and went to reconnect the media to the new drive. Weird thing is that I can’t get the media to reconnect. Usually all I have to do is select the clips in my bin go to Reconnect Media do a search and the computer will find the media and reconnect all the files in the same path. It works 100 out of 100 times…usually.
When I do this, rather that getting the list of clips to reconnect on the top half of the window, I get a single ” “is missing ” prompt instead of the list of clips. Note that there is a single quotation mark right before the “is missing” in the window. If I select a clip in the bin and search for it manually while in the reconnect window, it will reconnect OK. The really weird thing is that when I select the clips in the bin, the same list doesn’t show up in the reconnect window…just that damn ” is missing. Usually this operation is a no-brainer. And the clips DID reconnect before when using the Lacie drive that took a dump. Everything worked normally with the defective drive.
I’ve trashed the preferences and all the usual stuff. Since this is a fresh install on a Powerbook, I’m probably just missing a check box or something but it’s strange that it worked the first time…
    Any ideas?
BTW, this IS turning into the project from HELL today…and it’s Friday too.

Our assistant editor just had the EXACT same issue yesterday, but he only had 5 clips to reconnect, so he came up with the exact same workaround you did. No solution yet. Could this be a bug? He said it was clip dependent, and that when reconnecting one at a time some clip names would show in the reconnect window and some wouldn’t.

If you find an answer, please post it here. I’d love to know how to fix it.

    Best,

    Ben

    Interesting.
This was a fresh install from the DVD. After installing I went on-line to do all the usual updates before launching the program. Maybe, with all the updates Apple has been pumping out lately, something is broken?

    Hi Ben
FWIW, I did a clean install of FCP (only) and ran all of the online software updates and the files are reconnecting as they should be. I haven’t had a lot ot time to play with it today since I’m working under deadline, but it seems, at first glance, to be working.
Knock on wood. More later as time permits…
    Tom
