  • Can I install ONLY Final Cut onto a Powerbook?

Posted by Tom Matthies on May 11, 2007 at 1:09 pm

I’m in the middle of cutting a rough cut for a client using my desktop system. I need to pop out of town for a few days to work on another project and I’ll be trapped on airplanes and in airports for a good portion of the next few days. I’d like to continue doing my rough cut while on the road. I have a Powerbook but I’ve never loaded Studio onto it due to space issues with the system drive on the laptop.

Is it possible to install ONLY FCP on my PB and not all of the other Studio elements. I plan on copying my media to a small FW drive that can be powered off of the FW bus for playback of the media.
I seem to remember reading that it was OK to load the software on both a desktop system and a laptop without licensing problems. Since I own both systems, I obviously can’t be using them both at the same time. Is this allowable?

Absolutely. You can select the elements to be installed during the installation process.

    Thanks Walter.
I’m in production right now, but I’ll give it a go tonight. I didn’t remember if you were given the option of doing a custom install or not last time when I installed FCP 5.
I never like having all that downtime while traveling. Powerbook and both batteries going into the bag. Must be productive and all that.

    Tom,

You might want to consider an airline power adaptor if your flights are long. My buss powered drive really sucks up the juice.

And yes indeed, the FCP license was changed at 5.1 and permits installation on one tower and one laptop, as long as you own both and don’t use them concurrently.

    Have a fun trip!

    Hi Tom,

It might be easier to get a pretty big FW drive and:
    1. install OSX
    2. Use migration assistant to bring everything over from your desktop.
    3. Boot the PB from the FW drive which should be almost exactly like
    your Desktop.

    Best,

    WB
