I just don’t understand why it would need to do any converting at all if the source format is identical to the export format and there aren’t any filters or anything? Shouldn’t it just be gluing the files together?

  • Bret, you’re a kind hearted soul and a genius. This was the problem. Everything is working as it should now. I have to say, it is one of the DUMBEST bugs I have EVER encountered in my life. Turning on scopes forces renders? And alas, it will never be fixed…

  • Thanks Alex. Yeah alphas threw in the past but in this case is actually the bizarre scopes issue. See’s Bret’s comment below.

I’m having weird problems as well since doing a recent update. Files that shouldn’t need rendering now need rendering.

  • One thing that threw me when I first started exporting with Premiere was that I didn’t actually notice the scroll bar in the export window…

When you export, select Format:Quicktime. Don’t worry about the preset.

The go down to the video tab and select your desired codec. You’ll notice that the preset now says “Custom.” Then, use the scrollbar to the right of the video tab and you’ll get all the options you usually get with FCP. Because the settings are defaulted to whatever the preset was (which is not what you want), you need to manually change the framerate, frame size, etc etc etc. to get what you want.

I’m assuming you’re on a mac so a good export codec would be ProRes…

Thanks Ben. Yeah all the codecs are installed and everything. So I use the media browser in Premiere to navigate to where my red footage is, and all the files pop up with the little RED bullseye icon next to each file name. I double click the file and it tries to open the file, then a “preview in source monitor failure” window comes up, and the error message is “unsopported format or damaged file”. Similar things happen in AE.

Thanks for everyone’s input. Yes this is a bizarre and mysterious problem. I’ve been checking other forums and a bunch of other people have the same issue, with no fixes. Everything is up to date and all that… it just turns off the CUDA acceleration when I reboot and I have to reinstall the drivers. I’ll be completely clean installing my machine in a couple of months… maybe the problem will go away.

Trolling the NVIDIA forums, this seems to be a common problem, with no solutions as yet.
