I have exactly the same issue. Hit play with spacebar, and it plays properly… Play from RAM preview–regardless of codec–and it converts to 8-bit or some other lame sampling for the playback. I think this is just how AE works no matter what.

I’m still on the hunt for the ultimate settings for nice bandless gradients…

I won’t be able to check into it for a few days… But I’d be happy to.

Yep. All of the settings give me the banding. Weird… and no banding when comp is rendered thru Premiere.

Be sure to right click on your position transformation and tell it to “separate dimensions”… Then your x,y,z will turn into three separate values that the expression wants.

November 14, 2011 at 8:24 pm in reply to: premiere re-rendering unnecessarily

Thanks Angelo. This is great info to know.

But it is unfortunate that Premiere does not allow for that. Admittedly, it’s rare that you’d want it… But most editors have been in situations where they can’t open up a project file (FCP, Premiere, whatever) so they must import the master video file to make changes. If it’s a teeny change (like changing the copyright date or doing a little splice) it’s a shame that you’d have to have any kind of generation loss on the unchanged portions.

I love Premiere, but I will miss that about FCP.

I have no idea how I missed it! It just never dawned on me that such a major piece of software would be included for free. Adobe really should make a much bigger deal about it.

As to why I’m diving in… I’m just finishing up my first feature movie–a sci-fi flick packed with VFX. Being very indie, I had to do most of the vfx work myself and now with some higher-end stuff on my resume I’m starting to get some vfx freelance gigs. Mocha came up as a must-have tool and a colleague told me I already owned it! If only I had known!

Thanks for the post Brett. Could you tell me how to do the sync of external audio and DSLR video? The only sync thing I can find in CS 5.5 is to re-sync the audio to a video that you have unlinked. thansk! -tom

  • I wouldn’t mind if it didn’t let me play back… But to force a render? As a quality nut I try to avoid generations of rendering at all costs. I tried importing the actual render file… and with scopes on, it says it needs to render that as well.

October 26, 2011 at 5:06 pm in reply to: “use preview files” export question

    Thanks for the response Ann!

When I do “Match Sequence Settings” it does seem to pull up the precise settings from the sequence which I created. (In this case ProRes 422 1080p.) And it exports just fine.

The problem with the export is that it’s not using the preview files. The settings for the preview files (in the sequence settings) are the exact same as the export settings. In theory, the exporter should use these preview files with no need to recompress.

The reason why I’m doing all this in the first place is because I’ve got a lot of embedding AE compositions on the timeline. It takes a while to render them on the timeline so I can properly do my edit. It’s a huge pain to have to RE-render them when I export…
