If you intend to do After Effects work I highly recommend the
Trapcode Suite and the Zaxwerks family of plugins. They address any needs for particles(3d), glints, 3D text,volumetric lighting, 3D Strokes and a bunch of other cool things. I use them daily.

Jody, try turning off the Multiprocessor in the Preferences and see if it still crashes.

PI has a wonderfully large library of cool things. But I prefer the real time integration and 3D interactivity of Particular …hands down!

Try trashing the Compressor preferences and repair permsissions for the computer. Google for details if unfamiliar with these processes.

After working on projects using the file injest and the digitize work flows, its clear to me that either way, I need to take the time to review the content to I can intelligently utilize it in edit.
Instead of injesting the huge file, then transcoding it to Prores, then viewing for content (3 Steps), I prefer to digitze, convert and view content simultaneously (1 step). Much more efficient use of my time.
