  • Compressor is not working through FCP

Posted by Yiannis Valkan on November 25, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Hi all. I have FCP 6.0.1.
I upgraded to FCP 6.0.5 and all the pro apps including compressor.
When i started FCP and tried to export via compressor, compressor started but i cannot see the windows.
Although i select to view them all nothing happens. It didnt work even if i started compressor alone and not through fcp.
I deleted the pro apps and put back (from a backup file) the FCP 6.0.1 & Compressor 3.0.1 but i have the same problem.
FCP 6.0.1 works great, but Compressor does not. Have i missed something when i put the files from the backup back?

    Thanx.

Try trashing the Compressor preferences and repair permsissions for the computer. Google for details if unfamiliar with these processes.

Thank you for your answer Tom.
The thing is that not only i am unfamiliar with these processes but i am kinda new to MAC system also.
I would be more than grateful, if you could help me step by step in this specific procedure.

    Thank you anyway.

    Try re-installing Apple Qmaster.

    hi Yiannis

this is a long shot… but you can try if Rafael’s tip doesn’t work.

sometimes, when primary language in your system is other than English, proapps, especially compressor, go crazy on updates.

you can check in system preferences.

    is this your case?

Make sure you are not trying to use all 4/8 of your cores with Compressor (cluster). It will crash every single time. It is not supported by Apples very own Hardware, OS and Software.

I had such a nightmare with it I haven’t even touched that menu item in quite a while. Compressor and FCP need some TLC by the developers.

Tick you off? Tell me about it.

    Thank you all.

Rafael: How can i install Qmaster only? If u mean to delete the updated version and paste the backuped version i already did and nothing changed.

Hector: The primary language is English.

Elijah: How can i be sure of that? Since the update compressor was working great.

Can you please tell me where i can find Compressors folders or files except the /Applications/Compressor.app? Maybe if i will replace all compressors files with the previous it will work.

    Thank you all.

if nothing works for more than a day 🙂

sometimes its not a bad idea to do a clean reinstall of the studio.

if you own a full version of FCP studio, and have a couple of free hours, you might just save yourself a whole lot of time of troubleshooting

try this, or google for a similar app, there are a few out there

    https://www.finalcutpronews.com/2008/10/fcs-remover—u.html

    its a FCP studio remover

haven’t tried it yet as it quite new

after you remove, repair preferences in OS
then, using the OS install DVD, repair your system disk.

restart and install the studio again.

when you update the studio, don’t use software update, but rather go to the apple website and download the updates to your disk, then install them. computer voodoo can work… 🙂

this is a good tip for system updates, i believe that downloading combo from website then installing works better.

if this doesn’t work too… it won’t be a bad idea to do a clean install of leopard.

    good luck

    Hi Yannis,
Unistalling Compressor is a critical task if you don’t want to have this kind of problems later.
Here is, step by step the process:
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1888
Try the Fc remover. I know that people is using it and haven’t heard no complains about.
If you keep having problems, I agree with Hector, is better to try a clean install.

    OK guys. Thank you all.
I think i will KILL fcp and others and reinstall them from scratch.
    One last question.

I have the original version 5.1, then i bought the upgrade version to 6.0.1 and now i hav downloaded the latest 6.0.5. After my system is clean from FCP and other apps, which one do i install? Do i have to go through all the versions? or if i install the latest (downloaded) it will ask for the original SN?

Thanx again for all you time !

The ProAPLICATIONS is just an update and you will need to have FC in your system to install it.
I don’t know if you will be able to install the FC 6.0 upgrade without installing FC 5.1 before. I don’t think so, but you can try. As soon as you try, the installer will tell you if you can or not.
