    The frame rate of the orig might be more important to the result than the fact that it was progressive. Was it 29.97 or something else?

    That would be a neat trick. I don’t know. How about export the sequence to Compressor 3 times, making a batch of three exports. Then, in the batch, adjust the cropping of each of the three to the area wanted? Not sure if Compressor has the type of cropping you need.

    I don’t see any reference to 864 nowadays in FCP. The manual says to use 853×486 for ‘601’ and 853×480 for DV. It’s not a big difference, but something’s gotta give.

    Short answer is: You shot DV, so capture and edit in DV.

    Your original recording is DV (aka DV25). It’s active area on the screen is 720×480 pixels. That’s a 3:2 ratio in terms of the number of pixels. But the pixels are not square. The aspect ratio of the TV screen is 4:3.

    Common theory is that the best you can get from your DV original is to do a direct digital capture of the footage without recompressing it again. That means you capture as DV via a FireWire connection to the computer. This preserves all the original detail of your video.

    But there are reasons to defy that. If you plan to add a ton of effects and color correction to your footage, it can be worth it to capture to an uncompressed format. DV degrades rapidly with multiple renderings. Uncompressed does not. The trouble is, it’s a heck of a lot less convenient to capture uncompressed from a consumer mini-DV camcorder–and the analog outputs of the camera may be really lousy.

    A good compromise is to capture DV and edit your footage that way. But at the end of the edit, change your sequence to a less compressed format and render it. Set your rendering to High Precision YUV. This will make any titles, graphics and corrections look much better. You can easily change the sequence to DVCPro50. It’s the exact same pixel aspect ratio, but uses less compression than regular DV (aka DV25).

    So, at least for a start…you shot DV, so capture DV.

    I was thinking that might be the case. So you went straight to a 16:9 DVD or letterboxed it in a 4:3 DVD? Also, did compressor recognize the source as progressive?

    Meaning I would use the “CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27)” setting in Final Cut Pro, with the “Anamorphic 16:9″ box selected.”

    You have it right for NTSC. Square pixel elements should be 853×486.

    PAL 1024X576. There’s a “Frame Size Chart for Creating Graphics” in the fcp6 manual.

    Not sure I get the picture.
    Can you nest the main sequence in three separate 720-wide sequences and change the x-position to left, center, or right in each of the three?

    The recent release of QuickTime 7.2 created an audio compression error for Flip4Mac WMV Studio, Studio Pro and Studio Pro HD customers. Specifically, when encoding WMV files with Flip4Mac WMV v.2.1.2 using uncompressed audio sources on QuickTime 7.2 systems, customers were receiving “Inconsistent Audio Sample Rate” error and the encode will fail.
