  • Same problem has cropped up in new installation of macOS Sierra, FCX 10.3, Kona LHe+. Fix is about the same–maybe a slight variation. Go into Audio/Midi Setup, change Speaker Configuration to something other than Stereo and make sure you apply the change. Then change if back to Stereo. Seems to fix the issue.

Tom, this sounds related to this:

It’s a quick fix and causes no harm. In my case, the setting appeared to be correct already, but going through the steps to set it, fixed my monitoring issue.

  • I found this from Apple helpful. Even though the setting appeared to be on “Stereo” already, setting it again fixed the issue.

When FCX is not seeing the BMD device, is the OS able to control it, or is it disabled at the OS level as well?

  • Settings depend on your input and output aspect ratio. If you want 4:3 to pillarbox to 1080, set your padding to 4:3. If both are 16:9, leave padding alone. Set resize to Best and Retime to Better. Adaptive details can enhance a bit for up rez. Try without and with 100% and then fine tune to taste.

I never thought about it before, but FCX allows sort of an infinite expansion of your media storage for a library. When you Modify Settings for storage location, note that it tells you, “Newly imported or generated media, cache files, and library backups will be stored in the locations you choose. Existing media and backup files remain in their original locations.”

So, when one storage location becomes full, you can specify another one, which will contain all NEW media, from that point in time, forward. As each drive fills up, add another and “Modify Settings.” At the end of the job, you might add one more big drive and “Consolidate” the whole job onto it.

Shift-F on the clip in the timeline to select used range in browser–keeping keyword editor open to type keywords.

I have similar issue. Only happens when A/V output is active. If my AJA IOExpress is deactivated in FCX, it’s OK. I’m working with AJA right now, but I suspect it’s not the fault of the AJA box or driver. I can at least trim if I turn off A/V output.

[Tom Brooks] “All normal level and lav mic went to the Dialogue role. For clips with a boom mic channel, that channel went to the Boom Mic role. Clips with a lower level channel for safety went to Lower Level Audio role. I exported a master with Roles as Multi-channel Quicktime file–all roles set to mono.”

I didn’t phrase that quite right. For example, if a clip had lav mic and boom mic channels, I let the lav mic channel go to the Dialogue Role and the boom mic channel went to the Boom Mic Role. This can be done by expanding the audio components for the clip and using the Assign Roles command. So, a single clip can have its multiple mono audio channels assigned to multiple Roles and therefore that audio will go to discreet channels in the exported QT file.

I needed a multi-channel master today (to send some clips to another editor) and checked in on this thread to get a quick lowdown on it (the quick part didn’t work out so well). I chose Jeremy’s Roles output and it worked just great. Basically, I had clips with either lav mic and boom mic or a normal level and a lower level recorded–all mono channels.

All normal level and lav mic went to the Dialogue role. For clips with a boom mic channel, that channel went to the Boom Mic role. Clips with a lower level channel for safety went to Lower Level Audio role. I exported a master with Roles as Multi-channel Quicktime file–all roles set to mono.

Brought the resulting QT into FCX, just as an editor would do, and it has 3 discreet mono channels. These mono channels can now be mixed and panned as desired in the timeline. Just what I needed.

Of course, it’s only upon doing this panning that the audio is separated to Left and Right. It’s all centered until that point, as would be expected. I think this output format is much better for an editor to receive than a stereo track with various clips panned in different ways. The channels were discreet mono channels in the camera and needed to be delivered that way to the editor. Roles are a great way to do it.
