    Hi Everyone!

    I’m beginning new projects, and wanted to get an opinion on which speed to shoot at. I’m using the V1U. The first project is a series of short documentary style pieces on an AIDS camp in the Bahamas and an orphanage in the Bahamas. These are going to be more cinematic and won’t have a ton of fast movement or action, if any at all. The second project is a series of promotional videos for a children’s center and intern program. This is going to be fast paced, and will probably involve shots of kids doing activities, sports, etc. Lots of movement.

    While I love the look of 24p, it doesn’t do well with lots of movement/action, especially fast movement. It’s also a real pain to edit. I never have found a workflow that worked well for me. I always ended up with some kind of field/cadence issue. I’m about to update to FCS2, and I’m not well versed yet in how it handles this issue. How does it do with 24p shot on the Sony HVR-V1U?

    I haven’t done much with 30p yet. From my understanding, it looks better than 60i (less video-like) and handles motion better than 24p. However, I’ve never edited in 30p. What is that process like/what is involved in that? How do I extract that from the 60i stream?

    So, what do you think? What tips would you have?

    I shot a concert with 3 V1U’s and this is my advice:

    If you choose 24fps, shoot 24P not 24PA. This will allow
    you to edit in a 60i easy setup with your 24P embedded within.

    There is no reason to shoot 24PA unless you intend to print to film.

    The capture preset that works perfectly in FCS 2 is
    “1080i60 firewire basic” oddly the “1080i60 Sony HDV”
    easy setup was completely unstable and locked up fcp during capture.

    What is your final delivery medium and how will it be presented? Standard def DVD? Played to an LCD, plasma or projector? Played to an interlaced TV? Broadcast? Thanks.

    If I shoot 24p and edit in 60i, how is the pulldown removed? From my understanding, if you edit like that, the pulldown isn’t removed and you’re dealing with 24p motion judder.

    What would you say about 30p? Doesn’t that handle action a little better?

    There’s going to be several modes of final delivery. Online, standard def DVD played on TV’s and computers, played through a projector. Broadcast is a possibility as well, but not definite at this point.

    the 24P mode give you 24fps cadence (jitter/judder) in a 60i stream.

    If you want it to look like film/24p then shoot 24p.

    If you want it more fluid like TV shows then shoot 30p.

    Its really that simple.

    Right, but shouldn’t the pulldown in 24p be removed in editing, instead of just tossing it into a 60i timeline and treating it like 60i?

    The beauty of the V1 is that it shoots 24p and immediately gets converted to 60i with 3:2 pull down added keeping a film look and easy editing 60i. You never need to remove the pull down unless your are really going to a film output. I’m shooting with my V1 @30p right now for a new show and I really like this image, its a very solid look. Just forget this removal jazz working with the V1 unless you really need to get to 24 frames.

    Michael,

    What do you think about the 24p versus 30p? You sound pretty happy with your 30p footage.

    I’m guessing the ease of editing you’re talking about is in FCS2? I haven’t updated yet, but am about to.

    You don’t need FCS2 to edit HDV 60i. I don’t think you understand that ALL SONY HDV units make 60i. Some like the V1 can shoot progressive but as I said it is lays to tape as 60i. I think you should shoot 24p if you don’t pan to much and the same for 30p. I really think you should test a little more and see what works for you.

    no, not unless you are going BACK to film do you need native 24p editing necesarily.

    Besides, 24P Advanced (24PA) is not even supported in fcs 2 yet so its 24p or 30p are your only options.

    If your uncertain, stick with 30 and you’ll be fine.
