    Hey,

I’m working on an animated graphic in adobe’s Flash, and need to deliver a 16:9 Widescreen presentation (AKA 16:9 Full Height Anamorphic (FHA) ). It will air on the BBC.
I want to make sure that what I draw in flash looks correct when broadcast.

I’m worried about the whole square vs. non-square pixel thing.

In my searches I’ve found a lot of conflicting info about which dimensions I should create my artwork in?

    853 x 486 ?
    960 x 533 ?

Then I would assume that “16:9 Full Height Anamorphic widescreen” is 720 x 486.
Meaning I would use the “CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27)” setting in Final Cut Pro, with the “Anamorphic 16:9” box selected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

I love you guys, girls and martians

Correct. It’s a full screen image, will look stretched vertically. You have to hit the anamorphic button in FCP to make it letterbox and look correct.

You have it right for NTSC. Square pixel elements should be 853×486.

PAL 1024X576. There’s a “Frame Size Chart for Creating Graphics” in the fcp6 manual.

[Tom Brooks] “Square pixel elements should be 853×486.”

Yes, so design at that aspect ratio and frame size (actually it’s 864×486 square as 853 pixels wide if for dv as in 853×480) then squeeze down on final render to 720×486.

I don’t see any reference to 864 nowadays in FCP. The manual says to use 853×486 for ‘601’ and 853×480 for DV. It’s not a big difference, but something’s gotta give.

…and if it is for the BBC, it will want to be in PAL. Not NTSC.
