    Litepanel Micro looks awesome.

I purchased a Sima 20L(?) At Amazon for something like $35 and it’s pretty impressive for Wedding type work but the white balance is a little off and it has an enclosed battery so about 45min of usage per charge.

So far everything I’ve read about Litepanel Micro says it may be as close to a perfect light as you can get in this category. AA batteries and no 20lb battery hanging around your waist.

Watch out for all those little 9 led lights out there unless you just want to film the baby.

    Best,

In a pinch you can dump it back to your DV camera then re-import and see if it works better that way.

Things should not be out of time when exporting so there’s some funny business going on.

    Good luck

Panasonic pretty much invented 24p and from what I have gathered the Canon does something so similar to 24p (24f) I can’t tell what the difference is yet and I hear it’s pretty good.

Sony seems to be the odd man out on this although I must confess, I never once used the 24p on my Panasonic. I bought it because I loved how the 60i footage looked. I figure if I hit it with a nice indie film I’ll let the studio do a professional 24p conversion. .

  • Someone just gave me a 2008 consumer reports book and I was literally flipping through it killing time and guess what?
Sony rate of serious failure. 2.5%
    Panasonic 3-5%, I can’t remember.
    Canon 10%
    JVC 10%

These are reported failures serious enough to return the item. This means that Canon has a 400% higher failure rate than Sony. I pretty much expected that. Canon does lenses, Sony electronics.

Oh well, I bought the Canon and odds are 90% that I got a good one!

At the price you could buy 3 over the z1U, have one fail and be justified!

June 25, 2008 at 8:16 am in reply to: Canon xl2 vs. Panasonic AG-DVX100B

I can tell you right now that I am regretting dumping my DVX-100P for a Canon XH-A1 on many profound levels. That said, it appears that HDV just generally sucks for low and apparently what I used to refer to upper mid light levels.

I also used to use a GL2 which was nice but not great.

Disclaimer: This camera is new to me and may require heavy manual adjust to do decent low light.

Bottom line for your question. Only bad thing about 100P which I think was corrected later is that it was TERRIBLE in bright light. How odd is that? Made me look like a superstar shooting events in Auto w/manual exposure. Beautiful skin tones. Unsurpassed really.

I miss the DVX audio limiter that makes it very difficult to overdrive your lines even in manual level mode. If you overdrive it “auto-limits.” I don’t think Canon has this but the manual is extensive so maybe I’ll get there in a week or 2. TOO BUSY WORKING TO FIDDLE AROUND MYSELF.

Sony is also known to bee good for ease of use. Just check Discovery channel who uses it almost exclusively.

Good luck. You can’t beat the Panny and the prices should be quite low.

I use DVD architect so I don’t have to worry about MATH……..

Hated that! Then sometimes it would not work out for whatever reason. Are we monkeys?

DVD architect takes the DV AVI and optimizes it for the disk in the click of a button. Then it does the conversion.

    Love that.

Never met another DVD authoring program that I actually liked.

  • I guess with the Canon to get good low light performance you have to know what you’re doing a little more than with the FX1?

Strongly leaning toward moving toward the XH A1’s so I’m doing what I always do in these cases, playing devil’s advocate.

    Thanks.

I’ll take any input I can get on these comparisons.

How about a good Canon Newbie low light setting since I’m darn near convinced this is the direction I’m headed?

    Thanks.

  • I think the Vixia V30 has 1080i, 30p and 24p while the XH A1 has 24f. Not sure of the difference.

Does the XH A1 tend to saturate to where the image seems less sharp? I think one way to make an image appear sharper is to have it be more pale.

My Sony competitors videos (I own some older Sonys and the HD1000u) seem clearer yet less colorful.

    Thanks.

I’m not a huge Sony fan, not a hater by any means either but from what I can normally tell the Sony image is either clearer or it may just be giving the illusion of being clearer because there seems to be less color (or more natural color?) with those cameras?

I’m a disenfranchised Panasonic DVX100 user looking for an HDV solution and although there are great things about both Sony and Canon I am afraid that I will never see skin tones like I did with the Panasonic in HDV and I can’t afford….NOT INTERESTED IN rediculously expensive tapeless formats that must be stored on gargantuan hard drives that crash frequently and DVD/Blue RAy disks that experience chemical breakdowns (I have tragically experience both and ONLY trust TAPE).

I think Sony has a higher actual pixel count. I canon still using that pixel shift?

Thanks (considering XH A1 despite many posts about quality issues).

Is the 503 better than the 501 other than features?

I have heard the 501 is the lowest priced true fluid but I have also heard it’s the 503?
