  • Thank you!

I don’t expect any camera to totally compete with Sony in low light because that’s their thing. There’s a great shootout comparison on dv.com that say the Canon is better than it’s listed 7lux (which would be terrible).

I appreciate the input. I have to also bear in mind that people are FAR more likely to post if they have an issue.

Frankly, at the price they’re selling them for I can afford to fix one.

I appreciate the positive input as I was almost getting discouraged.

  • That’s good news. I have to take these reports with a grain of salt but when I see 20 Sony reviews none reporting a problem and 30 Canons reporting 3 problems…..well, I’m a big stat guy.

The truth is that I have no brand loyalty whatsoever and Canon A1 really looks appealing to me.

    Anybody else?

    Thanks T2

  • PS, my only real Canon experience was a few shoots with a GL1 which I did not think was bad at all. A little red, but that’s Canon.

    Thanks.

    You guys are scaring me!

At BHphoto there are 30 Canon reviews, 3 of which describe the issues mentioned above.

How disappointing. I have been following Canon for 15 years now and of the 3 bigs (Sony, Panny) I have never seen a camera with a worse history of issues than Canon.

This is tough because I was seriously considering jumping in and grabbing an A1. After all the posts about cameras “crapping out” during shoots I’m not sure I can afford the liability.

Truth be known, I have never been a Sony fan but I have never seen one go down in 20 years.

I guess you need to contact Canon.

Big torpedo…..I was almost sold and now I’m waffling. I guess you can buy the extended warranty but then you add $400 to the price of the camera.

    Good luck.

I am having this same issue. Sony is clearly the low light king, the battery king and the reliability king. Panasonic is the color subtlety king in my opinion but they left me behind when they left tape behind. It just doesn’t make good business sense for even videographers to use anything but HDV.

My only worries about the Canons are the long history of mechanical failures and the tiny LCD. I hear it’s pretty high res but I swore I would never go back to anything smaller than a 3.5 after the DVX100. A 2.8 in wide screen is really more like a 2.2 when you consider aspect ratio.

Regardless, I am afraid that right now Canon may be by far the best bang for the buck….and hey….I may just fall in love with them. (need 2)

    Great problem to have!

One of your settings is off somewhere. Check your mic/line switches on the front of the camera.

The simple answer….use headphones and always check both mics.

    Good luck.

My DVX100 has 800 hours on it with maybe 7 head cleanings all time. I have mixed and matched tapes and it works as well as the day I bought it.

As long as there is nothing else wrong with it you should be fine.

PS, for the most part I started using the Panasonic pro dry formula tapes which seems to have been good for the camera.

Good luck. This is an awesome camera if you don’t need HD.

Thank you Noah….Parting with my DVX is like losing a best friend but everybody wants HD now.

I will wait and check this out as you can’t beat the DVX for color.

March 29, 2008 at 7:28 am in reply to: SOS! Help with D/T Removal on HDV Footage

There has to be a way to turn this off in the menus. No cameras that I know of actually record this info ON the footage, it is a parallel code that can be turned on or off.
