http://www.camcorderinfo.com is really good at comparisons in this price range and lower. They actually have a rating system that is quite useful.

Lots of good single chip HDV camcorders around that price range now.

I would suggest going used. You can find many great deals on HD and SD Camcorders. I like Canon and Nikon for brands, they are the best.
