SOS! Help with D/T Removal on HDV Footage

Good Day,
Im not sure if this is the right forum but this is an SOS from Manila, Philippines. I recently shot a digital feature using a canon XL-H1 for the first time. Without getting hold of a manual I went on with my instincts and shot the feature film. I tweaked the settings that would only concern image control. Unknowingly, this camera has an option to record the time and date and embed it to the HDV footage. Im not sure If i accidentally set it or the user before me. Normally, When I shoot with an HVX-200 or a DVX-100 or a PD-150/VX200 or a canon XH-A1 the timecode and other details will just be visible in the LCD/EVF but not in the footage. When I previewed the footages in-camera I was confident that the OSD wont be emebedded. When we brought the tapes to a post facility…that’s where the nightmare began. The date and time was embedded, we called Canon (Philippines) but they could offer nothing. I verified through a downloaded manual and it said “it cannot be erased”…Now here is my glimmer of hope…Whenever we scrub through the footage the time and date disappears only the video footage is displayed in the monitor but when it pauses the time and date is displayed again…if this is so…Im thinking that the time and date data is on a seperate track or layer in the digital domain…Could this be true? Is there a way to resolve this? to get the time and date out of the picture? Are there other post-processes? a software maybe? last resort is to re-crop but it would destroy the framing. Another last resort option is to rotoscope the frames, but that would be too costly and time consuming…Any help is welcome or at least point me to a logical direction…

I checked the screengrabs, and the first one is a clue that you might have imported the footage in some non-standard way. Why do I think this? Because, you can have the camera display that information when playing back tape AND you can have that information pushed out the composite connections as well.
So how did you import the footage? What format is it currently in? And since you see the D/T flicker in and out as you scrub, you’re probably right that you can easily remove it, so there’s a good chance that you just imported your footage with either a wrong setting or through a monitor-intended video port on the camera.

Thanks for the reply. The footage was ingested via firewire. The XL-H1 really has a feature to burn in the Time/Date Stamp, but I’m still baffled that on the other screen grab all the OSD was burned in also. I have yet to make a trip to our local canon distributor to re-create the problem. Thanks again!

I did a little research for you. The “Character Recording” function is turned on in the “SYSTEM” menu under “CHAR. REC” and can be set to ON or OFF. If it is on, the data is permanently burned into the video. You can also display this metadata when playing back the image even if it is not burned into the video. This is turned ON and OFF in the menus under “DISPLAY SETUP”, “TV SCREEN”.
So, there is the possibility that you had the data displayed when the material was captured even though it was not burned into the video. If this is true, you should be able to recapture your footage. Good Luck!

Just an update…
I went to canon (philippines) the other day to check the camera they lent to the production team. I shot and I recaptured on my laptop some footage to re-create the problem. It just confirms that the person who borrowed it before us must have swtiched the “Char Rec” feature on. Since I didnt had a manual at the time prior to the shoot, I assumed everything was preset…like I said in my first post I only fiddled with the image control settings since I was “afraid” to touch the system settings. Again, this experience just reiterates the importance of testing.

There has to be a way to turn this off in the menus. No cameras that I know of actually record this info ON the footage, it is a parallel code that can be turned on or off.
