For my money I’m sticking with tape. Had far too many hard drive crashes and DVD chemical breakdown on bad batches.

How amazing to be able to save 80min of HDV to a ten dollar tape.

Right now its between the Canon A1 and Sony FX1 w/beachtek.

    Good luck.

I just read about this in a review at BHphoto along with a lens barrel and transport problems. I am seriously considering this camera but historically they seem to have far more issues than other cameras.

I always hot swap my firewires without issues but this does worry me.

    Good luck.

Canon A1….24f, XLRs, check it out.

I sure love my Panny but they unfortunately left my market segment behind by not providing an HDV camcorder.

Can’t imagine ever not backing up to tape. It’s just the only reasonably priced reliable format.

    Good luck.

PS, give them a coupon for 25% off their second wedding.

    Kidding.

  • Good stuff, keep em’ coming.

I come from 8 years as an event videographer doing a few weddings a year but I am looking to fill my calendar.

I have never lost a repeat customer but in this stunningly competitive wedding industry (DJs, Photgraphers, Kids with video cameras, film students, crazy hippies) with everybody claiming to shoot video.

Since video is a one time job it must be tough to get a reference from a bride unless in a very small town.

    These are good suggestions.

    Keep them coming!

March 2, 2008 at 7:24 am in reply to: Some jaded thoughts for the new year

    Mick,

Sounds like you need some business tips if you’re making $10 an hour. My brides tell me years later that they view their wedding video several times a year and look at them more than their photos. Do get over yourselves, but do also remember that this work on many levels is far more important many people than any movie they will ever see.

Make the video fun and entertaining so people can actually watch it with their friends without them being bored.

Weddings are about 1/3 of my business but I treat them as something that is very important and NEVER shoot with a single camera.

The reason you put camera specifications is because brides see it everywhere else and they think they know somthething so if you don’t have it they won’t call. This year it’s “HD” and “Blue Ray.”

I know you’re not really jaded. It’s the weasels in the wedding business that bother me. I don’t see that in the other 2/3 of my business. It’s a one time job so people produce crap and give us a bad name.

    Cheers,

    Todd R.

Get yourself a second camera if at all possible. I would never even consider shooting a wedding w/one camera. Also, make sure you get a GOOD wireless. Sennheiser Evolution 100 is a good mic at a reasonable price and for $600 you can get one with both a lav and a transmitter that will go on any mic with an XLR.

Go to http://www.weddingvideodoneright.com for some good advice about shooting weddings. You don’t want to be the guy who ruined somebody’s wedding video. This is very important stuff.

    Good luck.

  • I am seriously and sincerely interested in hearing from people who have both PC and Apple.

In the post above “rendering taking 7 hours” it says that Apple does not read .avi’s well? This is concerning as my current version of Premiere seems to do just fine with Quicktime files or just about any file for that matter. I wonder if that has changed with the newer versions.

It does seem like Apple is becoming extremely proprietary.

I do see that it’s tough to raise these questions as people have loyalties which is actually kind of odd if you think about it.

I just want to make the best investment for my very little company and for us equipment decisions are just brutal sometimes.

    Thanks again.

February 9, 2008 at 9:29 am in reply to: HELP…export issues and then some!

Is the original file(s) corrupt? Can you play it in QT?

Usually when I see this in Premiere it is a source file corruption issue or a project file corruption issue.

If you export one of the corrupt sections does it come out all right?

The other times I’ve seen this is when my hard drive is too full but it usually does not have the missing audio component.

Can you copy the project file to another drive and re-open it?

    Good luck.

  • Thank you Walter!

    Hi Shane,

I’m sorry but your assumption is absolutely, totally, dead wrong so I thank Walter for taking my question at face value.

I love that I can buy a PC for far less than an Apple but my only true preference is for value.

I have a bunch of Dell P4 3gig computers that cost $350ea 3 years ago and rock my 3 camera DV edits with no problem. Can’t beat the price, but now with HDV the price differences for dual quad core computers are not that great and one of the big differences with apple is that they just don’t make cheap computers.

I think Apple probably uses better components, etc. Everybody seems to agree that Apple has a better operating system.

I love the idea of editing faster, having fewer issues and rendering & previewing effects faster.

I guess I’m just trying to find out if it’s myth or really true anymore. The computers seem to be getting closer. Vista seems to try to copy Apple a bit. Pentium processors…I hear you can run FCP on a PC now?

Can I still get $100 500gig name brand SATA drives with an Apple? I was told Apple hard drives are more expensive but I thought a hard drive was a hard drive?

This is why it’s great to hear from people who have both.

Thanks and have a great one.
