One of the cool things I’m looking forward to in 9.5 that I saw at SIGGRAPH was the new Hemisphere light setting in the Light attribute manager. Just choose Hemisphere from the light type dropdown menu, scale it to encompass your scene, and – wala – instant dome lighting. Just add another light as the Key light source and you have a quick Global Illumination scene; with render times a fraction of Radiosity.

    Simon,
Is “Fizz” on one of the CD’s that ships with R9?

Digital-tutors.com has a CD of tutorials for RealFlow. But it may not be worth buying if you don’t plan on getting RealFlow.

Can you share a render of the scene? It’s hard to tell what the problem may be by just a verbal description.

As Adam pointed out, turning up the Min/Max will help smooth out the artifacts immensely. With radiosity you’re looking at long render times anyway. The trade off is the added realism.

I would also recommend turning down Diffuse Depth to 3. Anything above 3 won’t add much to the realism or details and just dramatically increases your render times.

Good choice on getting the 3DFluff DVD on Radiosity. It’s quite detailed and informative.

    – Select the object in the Object Manager.
    – Go to Functions > Duplicate.
    – In Attributes Manager, type in the number of copies you want.
    – Check the box next to “Generate Instances”.
    – Check the manual on page 582 for more details on the settings.

Wow, Dan. That looks to be an excellent new plugin.

The “Parent” constraint especially looks interesting because combined with Cappacino you can animate something and give its movement a very organic feel by adjusting the Strength parameter.

I have one silly question though. I couldn’t quite make out the use/benefit of the “Clamp” constraint. Can you give me an example of how that would be best utilized?

BTW, what will be the going price for it when it comes out?

    Thanks. 🙂

Generating UV’s doesn’t guarantee that the texture will move with the mesh if the geometry is distorted with Bones or some other deforming tool. Page 713 of the manual goes into better detail of how the Stick Texture tag works.
