Yes, it not only affects the render quality, but I have also noted at times shifts in the video/chroma levels. It is not ideal, but it will get you through in a pinch. YUV is the better quality BTW.

It would be interesting to see if changing your render settings helped in your case though… Might help you/someone track down where the problem is.

    Good luck you you!

I’ve found that when FCP does this you can get around it in a pinch by turning off YUV rendering, especially if you are using 10-bit. A lot of the Sapphires (which I use often) will do this. You can ctrl-click the sequence, go to sequence settings, and then the render control tab I beleive. I’ve had to turn it to RGB for other reasons too (e.g. using motion blur in a variety of situations, like on top of composite modes, etc…) Hope this helps.

  • Hi Richard.

Jason has left us and went out on his own as freelance director, but we still get to work with him from time to time. I’ll tell him you said hi next time I see him.

Take care, and thanks for the tip!

Has anyone upgraded to 10.4.3 and FCP 5.0.3 without problems yet?

I was just about to upgrade tonight, but now I don’t know…

Open System Prefrences on your Mac and click the “Energy Savings” button. There is a box you can un-check that says “Put harddrives to sleep when possible” or something like that. That should do it.

August 30, 2005 at 8:51 pm in reply to: How do you relink on the Avid?

It’s not going to do the same function that you are used to in FCP with the “Reconnect offline media”, but you do have some options. I would suggest selecting the sequence that you want to relink, then select “Batch Import” from the Clip menu (I think). You should then get a list of media and the source file for each clip (this will only work for clips that were imported… not digitized, but I think that is your situation based on your last post…). Some of the clips will be red if you actually deleted the original, wrongly-imported ones and by clicking on each clip you can point it to where the new clip is. After you point each file to the “new” one you should be in business.

    Good luck!

If you have Marquee, that would probably be a much simpler way of doing things, although a long render.

I know exactly what you are talking about, and I can’t think of a good workaround. Locking the effect to the underlying clip is one of the most annoying things with Avid, but can also be used to your advantage in certain situations (like putting an effect on an empty layer of video above everything affects all layers underneath… sometimes useful).

One other possibility: If you have Sapphire, try the S_MakeRGB, then alt-drag a lighting effect (not sure which one to use in your case), keyframe that, then alt-drag S_Layer. Don’t know if you have Sapphire though…

    Hope this helps.

One note… I just tried it, and you have to use the numbers on your keypad, not the ones at the top of the keyboard above the letters. Weird.

It looks like you can press apple-1 to toggle track 1 on and off, etc. So apple-3 would toggle track 3 etc…

If you let go of the mouse with the arrow over a particular button for a second it will show you the shortcut usually FYI.
