Using the proper terms are very important in production communication!

What if we called a KEY a SUPER?

Not just “Digital 8 clamshell” decks.

Many “Digital 8” camcorders can play 8mm and Hi8 tapes out their FW jacks.
And that’s a convenient way to go.

However, as for the QUALITY being “better” dubbing that way…
I doubt that it will be any better than just using an analog Hi8 camcorder for playback and feeding its S-video jack into the Canon camcorder’s S-video jack and recording to DV in the Canon.

8MM and Hi8 are analog formats, full of drop-outs and video noise ON THE TAPE, and choosing to dub from a FW jack (internal to the player A-to-D,) although a convenience, will not make much (if any) image improvement over S-Video and A-to-D in the Canon camcorder.

If you want it to WORK, use a wire.

You can only have one FW A/V device connected to the Mac at one time.

You might try to just make a straight FireWire dub of the problem tape from one DV to another DV and try to capture the copy.

That’s an effect that is too diffucult to play in real-time.

If they made one-

A) It would be so expensive, it wouldn’t be worth it.

B) It would be so HEAVY you couldn’t carry it.

C) I wouldn’t trust EVERYTHING to be powered by one unit. If it dies… your whole shoot dies.

So its a ‘piece of cake’ to run this unit off of any kind of 12v battery (or set of batteries) that you’d like.

All you need is to buy the DV plug that matches the jack on the receiver and match the + – polarity correctly when you wire the cable.

I can’t see the exact jack, of course, so I can’t help with that, but its likely an easy match if you take the units to Radio Shack.
