8mm tapes best way to make mini-DV tape dub Master using Canon GL2
I want to know the best way to create mini-DV copies of my 8mm tapes? Can I just use me Canon GL2, or should I purchase something like the Canopus AVDC300? I want to create the highest quality video possible.I do understand that I will be using to different quality video, I just want to know how to create the highest quality mini-DV dub.

there are the clamshell 8mm decks that actually have a firewire output. That would probably be much better quality than doing a regular composite transfer

“Not just “Digital 8 clamshell” decks.
Many “Digital 8” camcorders can play 8mm and Hi8 tapes out their FW jacks.
And that’s a convenient way to go.However, as for the QUALITY being “better” dubbing that way…
I doubt that it will be any better than just using an analog Hi8 camcorder for playback and feeding its S-video jack into the Canon camcorder’s S-video jack and recording to DV in the Canon.8MM and Hi8 are analog formats, full of drop-outs and video noise ON THE TAPE, and choosing to dub from a FW jack (internal to the player A-to-D,) although a convenience, will not make much (if any) image improvement over S-Video and A-to-D in the Canon camcorder.
