Getting non drop frame warning when trying to re capture media
Posted by Dave Craig on August 5, 2007 at 3:27 amI do three camera multi cuts with 720p60 footage from a Panasonic vtr. After I have dumped the footage and have to go back to recapture I get a warning that reads:
“Warning: You are about to capture Drop Frame media from a device currently detecting Non-Drop Frame media. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media or removal of master clip relationships.”
I am using the same deck that I originally created and captured the project with and this was happening before and after the upgrade to fcs2 from fcs1.
If I go ahead and capture my multi clips are out of sync with original cut.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Time code is drop frame that is assigned before reaching the three VTRS.I am using a Mac Pro Quad 3.0GHz Intel

August 6, 2007 at 3:26 amFirst thing that comes to mind is to try Trashing the FCP Preferences.

August 6, 2007 at 4:31 amI received the same message after logging footage on a DVCAM deck, DSR-45. When I went to batch the clip the message popped up. The footage seemed to come in fine but it was a quick turn around so I couldn’t double check the clips against the code. I am running FCP 6.0.1 on a Mac Pro 2.66 Intel with OS X 10.4.9

September 12, 2007 at 11:54 pmI’ve never gotten this message before now. I just upgraded to final cut studio 2 and this is my very first project on it. Got this message the very first time I captured (second time I even opened FCP after upgrade).
By upgrade, I started with a freshly formatted drive, installed OS-X, Adobe CS3 apps, then FCS2 apps. Haven’t done one bit of preference setting yet.
To complicate matters further, when capturing the footage, occasionally I get a warning after the capture completes. I can delete the media and capture the same clip again and do not get the warning the next time. It’s a real pain in the neck. The exact warning is “WARNING: A change in the timecode format (Non-Drop Frame to Drop Frame) was detected while capturing “ClipName””
Any ideas besides trashing prefs?
Thanks,

September 13, 2007 at 1:01 amHey Gary
This was our solution. we would capture three cameras doing dvc pro
hd 720p60 (59.94) going through a time code generator then to three
decks. sometimes on capture we would get your same message you get and
on recaptures we would get the other message in my post.
After weeks of pulling our hair out and coming up with different
theory’s, we called in Larry Jordan to trouble shoot out system.
Here is what we came up with.
the people that set up our system, set the time code generator to drop frame.
hd is non drop frame,so the pre sets in FCP are for non-drop
I thought 59.94 meant that it was drop frame I found out that this is
not the case.
Because the time code generator was forcing drop frame time code on
the tape and we had our setting at 720p, final cut thought we were
capturing non-drop frame. that is why we were getting the message at
the end of capture.
Final Cut was looking for non drop and when the drop frame came it it
got confused.
I hope this helps

September 16, 2007 at 3:40 amI’m not working in HD. I’m using the DV NTSC 48kHz and DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2)Pulldown Removal capture presets. Aren’t they drop-frame by default?
I get the message every time I start to batch capture. I get it with or without a tape in the deck, and I have the deck set to drop-frame and I know all my tapes are drop-frame.
Maybe I am missing something, but I don’t think so, unless Apple changed the default presets (mentioned above) between version 5 and version 6 of fcp.
As for the other message that I get, the one after some clips capture, it is completely random. Within one source tape, from one camera, from one shoot where no camera settings were changed between clips, sometimes the message shows, other times it doesn’t.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

September 16, 2007 at 3:45 ambtw, the deck is a Sony DSR-45 and I’m capturing via firewire through an add-on firewire card.

December 29, 2008 at 5:49 amTo avoid that pop up: Go to FCP User Preferences: Timeline Options: Uncheck Drop Frame…(If you are capturing 24P or 24Pa footage..
That’s it!

December 29, 2008 at 6:23 amUnfortunately that doesn’t work. I tried that early on. I still get the message now and it’s unchecked. The way I’ve been avoiding the message is to FF or RW very close to the area of the tape I’m about to capture, pause, then start batch capture. Some how this works. I would love an easier way if someone can offer one. Thanks.

December 29, 2008 at 7:04 amDan,under Audio/Video settings:Device control Preset Editor do you have Frame Rate set to 23.98 Non Drop Frame? That is if you are capturing 24P footage…
For me changing all th settings to Non drop Frame did the trick…
I just batch captured 20 more clips no pop up!…
Best,
Paul
