erase audio from miniDV

In the Clip Settings panel of the Log and Capture window there are toggles for switching off video or audio as needed.

These are all pretty basic questions.

I’ve already tried changing the setting from “video & audio” to just “video” and it still won’t capture the video. I think the audio track is bad on the miniDV tape and that is why I want to try and erase the audio from the miniDV.
Any other suggestions?

It’s possible that the audio is bad and effecting the capture of the video, but it would certainly be the first time I’ve ever heard of it. Why you can’t capture video may be an entirely different problem. DV uses a muxed audio format so the only way to erase it is to dub it without the audio.

The video has problems also and I thought maybe it was due to the bad audio. That’s why I wanted to try and erase the audio from the original miniDV tape. I was hoping there was a piece of equipment out there that could erase just the audio. I have tried making a copy of the original tape without the audio but the video still has problems. I took it to my dealer and they have never seen anything like it before. (It is not from a clogged head).
Years ago, I had a SVHS deck that could do audio or video inserts and I thought maybe there was a deck that could do the same thing for a miniDV tape.

There used to be a dual deck machine that would do that, but it actually relayed the video as well. This is like 15 years ago.

Are you capturing from the camera or deck that recorded the material? Sometimes things get out of alignment and the tape will only play in the original camera or deck.

AND/OR…

You might try to just make a straight FireWire dub of the problem tape from one DV to another DV and try to capture the copy.

I not only tried playing back the tape in the camera it was shot in but I have also tried 3 other miniDV cameras and my Sony DSR20. The problem is still there. I still think the audio is causing the problem with the video. I have heard the same noise on my DVR when I play back some shows that have been recorded and then there is a glitch in the video.
I have also tried making a copy of the original miniDV without audio but the video still jumps. I was able to load the footage into FCP that way but needless to say, the quality isn’t the best. I did find on the internet that there are some decks that can do an audio insert but now to find one in my area.

DV has only existed for 13 years. 1994. I’m sure there are still tape to tape editing machines for DV, of which any that can insert edit, will be able to erase audio by inserting blank audio.

Whether this fixes the problem or not, who knows.
