All this procedure does is reduce the “volume” level (output signal level) using the controls and then adjusts the meter to compensate the reading to match the lower level.

Its no different than simply turning down the “volume” a bit (and just ignoring the meters.)

To reduce the actual output from the mixer, you need pads.

The difference would be very noticeable if, say, there was hum or hiss coming from the output section amp of the mixer.

Just turning down the input controls would reduce the signal level… but would not lessen the noise level.

But adding PADS would reduce the noise level as well as the signal level.

I’d guess that the audio files that are off-line, but continue to play on the timeline, were RENDERED and the render file is playing.

Makes no difference as far as quality or effect.

Connected in the output jack of the mixer.

Connected in-between two XLR cables.

Connected in the input jack on the camera.

All the same.

I’d suggest the second choice so that you don’t put any extra weight on either the mixer or the camera.

My first thoughts.

Trash FCP Preferences.

Repair all Mac disks and disk permissions.

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.

You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs, sync-slippage, or freezes.

NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.

First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:

Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.

You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.

It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.

NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.
