    Here is a strange one…

First off: G5 dual 2.7 4gig OS 10.4.10 FCP 5.0.4 using a ProMax SATA array with 4 drives divided into two RAID 0 disks.

In the System Settings I have Video Captures and Renders all set to one of the SATA drives (named Media 1) as well as the Waveform and Thumbnail Cache.

We were having some problems with render files going off line, but nothing serious, so there were not many complaints. Then as I went in to perform a routine “House Cleaning”, I discovered that there were NO render files in the render file folder! I checked some projects, and the render files were there, so they must be in the wrong place, right? Well, the system settings still say Media 1 so where are they going?

I checked everywhere I could think of and no luck. Then I noticed that render files were going offline when I emptied the trash. Whats up with that?

Turns out FCP is rendering video files in the Trash. Not sending them there, rendering them right there in the trash!

My first thought is that FCP is actually making a statement on what it thinks of my editing, but if that were the case I think this would happen to a lot more people.

At some point either FCP or OSX is re-routing the render files from the Media 1 drive straight to the trash. All the other files, like audio renders, etc., ar going to their proper folders and drives.

    Any Ideas?

    My first thoughts.

    Trash FCP Preferences.

Repair all Mac disks and disk permissions.

Oh, I forgot to mention that when I set the video render files to my other SATA drive Media 2 it works fine.

    Hilarious!

There was a problem of render files going into the application itself (the hidden contents of FCP). Try searching this forum from a few months back and see what you find.

Well, trashing the preferences did seem to fix the problem. (I use FCP Rescue).

I do still sort of wish that I knew what caused it in the first place, perhaps it could be some kind of feature, instead of a bug!

    Well…

I can tell you that I have a similar issue that can be repeated. My issue deals with render files going offline at anytime. It almost always occurs when you duplicate your timeline. But sometimes, render files will be lost from day to day at start up.

Its not all of the render files in a project, just some of them. And here’s the real kicker…. my sequence is still telling me that I have render files – ie. blue lines over the rendered files. BUT, when you playback your timeline, you see dynamic rate playback video, not fully rendered video.

The Pro Apps update didn’t solve this issue. Trashing the prefs don’t work either, neither does repairing the permissions. I’m seeing this on a Mac Pro Quad 3.0 and a G5 Dual 2.7. Both using FCP 6.01 and MacOS 10.4.10
