Walter, Shane, and all others still using the PVM 14L5. I’ve got one here hooked up via component, looks great but wondering about the HDSDI card option.

Does anyone have one? Feelings about quality difference?

There’s a part of me that says I should hold on to my cash for an LCD down the road versus putting more money into the CRT just for HDSDI. Any thoughts.

Anyone know where to get said card? price?

    Thanks,
    Ted

February 22, 2008 at 5:18 pm in reply to: HDMI Capture with HDV Deck Control?

I don’t mean to question anyone else’s workflow methods or codec preferences, they are preferences and fine options. I know that HDV is a capable format and don’t doubt that its manageable when needing to recapture. For this project, getting things out of Long GOP and getting the material in as ProRes, a format that holds up better to multiple generation/passing to animation/color and rendering is big consideration.

So I’m trying to get HDV material in as ProRes. The HDMI solution is not working out, its out the window in this discussion.

    HDV-ProRes
I have done some testing and reading of various post on the Cow in regards to capturing HDV to ProRes on the fly. I was very excited about the prospect of this working, though in my testing, and some posts I’ve seen on this specific HDV to ProRes workflow, it does not seem to have batch capture capabilities back to ProRes (via on the fly). And some user report time code accuracy inconsistencies.

If the HDV-ProRes on the fly function does have Batch capture ability can someone please clarify how it works.

    HDV-HDV
I know that HDV alone via firewire does have batch capture ability and I’ve done that workflow.
I’m not interested however in working in HDV as a codec for this project.

HDV-Convergent Design (HD Connect)-HDSDI (via Kona card)
This is probably the route I’ll be going, deck control and the ability to load via HDSDI to practically any codec.
From what I’ve read this has very accurate timecode for re-capture/batch capture needs.

If anyone has any experience with the Convergent design products Id love to hear your feedback on them. Or we can close this up and I can post on that forum.
Thanks you all for your help and advice with this.
    Cheers

Thanks Chris, I miss the desert. (a Tucson native held captive in the north east)

The HDV to ProRes on the fly workflow is really cool, its limitation that I can see is the re-batch-capturing those clips if things fail. A convergent design box and a new capture card like a Kona or and IoHD I think is the way to go on this. The Black Magic Intensity card that I have now was purchased initially as an interim solution for monitoring. Its clear now that its time to make the jump.

Thanks guys, very helpful. I’ll let you know how it works out.

    cheers,

Maybe a little off topic from this post, but I’m curious if anyone out there using the Convergent Design HD Connect SI or LE has any thoughts regarding quality difference and workflow on “HDV to ProRes via Firewire” VS “HDV to HD Connect SI {or} LE (HDSDI).

Thank you both for your replies. I was able to get deice control but having other issues with pulldown and starting to re-think approach.

I’ve seen the posts on ProRes on the fly, and just tried of bit of it myself. The only problem I have with going this route is not being able to reconnect if need be with the source tapes as it appears that you do not have that flexibility if you go this route. Or am I wrong?

I’m trying to get the content of this film in once, at the highest quality possible (short of uncompressed) so that there is not a need to re-digitize for finishing, however that being said, even with an awesome raid5 setup, things go wrong within production and computing and having a backup is a must for this film. A timecoded backup on tape that you can re-load from seems like the obvious choice, or is that out the window with HDV.

I don’t have a whole lot of experience with HDV as most of my clients are working in DVCProHD or better. How are people handling backups when working with this material? Digital?

    thanks for the help, cheers,
    Ted

February 21, 2008 at 8:42 pm in reply to: Canon HV20 capture on an Intensity Card using FCP 6

Any progress on this? I’m having the same issue and if there is in fact no solution, I’ll need to return some equipment.

Blackmagic’s site says that deck control via Firewire is supported. FCP and PPRO?

I’m on FCP 6.0.2 and trying to capture 24f material from HV20 through Intensity Pro via HDMI to 1920×1080 23.98 ProRes HQ.

    Thanks,
    Ted

  • Agreed, Thats the approach I plan on taking. I should know better within the next few hours.
I’ll be sure to report back with the result. I’m thinking that they will need an additional machine to run EyeTV if they plan on keeping that running constantly ( to record AP feeds).
    Thanks,

February 2, 2008 at 4:02 pm in reply to: Intensity Pro stopped working in new MacPro

Okay, well the problem is back. Today I booted up and again, the system is not seeing the Intensity Pro Card. (last time see above in thread, taking it out and re-installing the cardsolved the problem.) It seems quite foolish to have to open up my machine every time I restart.

Any thoughts on whether this is a software or hardware issue. Its seems its probably hardware, though it could be driver related. Are here any user experiences with the new MacPro’s (early 2008) where using a different PCIe slot makes a difference with Black Magic Cards.

Black Magic Support, please chime in with suggestions as it seems I either have a faulty card or there is a big conflict with your drivers and the new MacPro.

Thanks for any help or insight.
