good questions, guys. thanks for the input.

my monitor (an old Commodore 1084s – maybe that’s part of the problem?) is set up with an RCA cord out of my Beta deck…which works fine for TV and when Beta tapes are playing. i’m using a Blackmagic Decklink SD card for i/o between the deck and the G5. no blackburst generator being used.

doh! you’re right on the RAM. i upgraded to 2GB several months ago, but hadn’t updated my profile here (now i have).

yes, i’m talking an HD Motion project file.

yes, i was already planning on online to an HDCam deck elsewhere in the city, but am just amazed at the amount of time it wants to render a “simple” :05 graphic over video on the HDV timeline, so just wondered if there was something i could do differently to speed it up. otherwise, i just won’t render them, but just jog through them a bit to see that they look right and wait until online. thanks!

thanks, good idea, and i had checked this first off when i was sitting in post for twice as long as i expected. the on-board lithium battery was changed and working well. it appears to be a major flaw in the engineering of this model, as i’ve heard from the rental house that they talked to Sony and they said ALL the 700’s are that way. amazing, eh?

thanks for the replies, but it sounds like no one else here has been using the 700. every other camera i’ve ever used, even my trusty ol’ BetaSP DXC-D30, has kept continuous timecode throughout a power down power up situation (unless of course i pull a tape out and re-insert it without cueing up the regen on TC).

yes, i understand about logging and capturing, and i understand about doing a regen upon power up…but neither of these solve the problem:

logging and capturing – i would have to know exactly where on the tape the TC is going to break before this would buy me any time. yes, i could read the TC numbers as they fly by, and then note where the time jumps by 20 frames, but i think my eyes would be goofy by then. on the other hand, if i logged and captured every single shot individually, while also leaving enough time on the head and tail for pre-roll and post-roll in case there was a TC break there, it would work…

regen TC on power up – yes, it would work…but alas with what i’ll be shooting next week there is not always time for this luxury. it will be a hunting show, where i will need to power up and shoot rather quickly…or i could just bring enough battery power to leave the camera powered up all day and this would alleviate all problems…

anyway, thanks for the replies. if anyone has shot with the 700 or if Sony is listening, it would be nice to know WHY they created an expensive camera that looses TC with every power-down/up.

thanks. that’s kind of what i was thinking, that it didn’t really matter. i have a G5 and as i said in my original post, everything seems to be working fine…so that’s why i was a bit surprised that the COD FCP5 discs were saying it all had to be at 48K – even though they supply 44k audio clips!

Disk Utility reported no problems. Here is the report i received:

1 HFS volume checked
Volume passed verification

i don’t have any handy access to another Mac right now, so what might be the hardware issues you refer to?

also, i should’ve asked earlier, will running either of these utilities further corrupt any of the data on the drive? obviously, i realize if i reformat i’ll lose everything, but assume the testing should be fine…

thanks Luke. here’s a little more info, but in the meantime i’ll try what you’ve said…

the drive seemed to be working fine until i tried bringing these QT files back to my main media drive. also, the files show up in the Finder as “QuickTime movies”, but won’t play in QT nor will they reconnect to my FCP project. strangely, this is only happening in one folder, as i have another folder full of QT movies on the same LaCie drive that are playing fine right off the drive. it’s as if this one folder got corrupted somehow. does this happen very often? is there some sort of “approved method” for moving QT files from my main media drive to the LaCie drive so this doesn’t happen again?
