just got COD’s “Complete Training for FCP 5” and came upon the audio conversion. the clips that came with the set include some QT’s that say they have 44.1 audio, but of course we all know it has to be changed to 48 to work properly : )

so i converted these clips to 48 audio via the method on the disc (that is, through exporting out of QT). when i line up the new 48 audio underneath the 44 which is linked to the clip in FCP, they are the exact same length, but i had thought that the 44 vs. 48 actually changes their length slightly. either way, i hadn’t been doing ANY of these conversions in teh past and have ended up with fine results…never really checking if i was mixing 44 and 48 audio in the same project. have also made DVDs in DVD SP with no problems.

main question: does it REALLY matter if audio is 44 or 48?

thanks for helping out a bonehead,

No it does not matter. And no it shouldn’t ever change the length to convert them. If your computer can’t handle on the fly conversion of 44.1 to 48, then you need to bump it up and get a G4. 🙂

I’ve been using 44.1 as is since version 4 when they implemented conversion directly in FCP. Just drop it in the timeline, highlight it, and and do a “render – item level.” What that does is render only that audio clip, essentially upconverting it to whatever your sequence settings are, and then using that file instead of the audio file. You can move it around, change the volume, add filters, etc. It will never come unrendered (upconverted). It will be treated just like any audio file you bring in that is 48 when you bring it in.

And truthfully, since version 4.5 I don’t even do an item level render. If you’ve got a G4 it can convert it on the fly just fine. It may skip a frame once in awhile if there’s alot going on, but who cares. It’s going to get upconverted when you render before output in any case.

thanks. that’s kind of what i was thinking, that it didn’t really matter. i have a G5 and as i said in my original post, everything seems to be working fine…so that’s why i was a bit surprised that the COD FCP5 discs were saying it all had to be at 48K – even though they supply 44k audio clips!

thanks for the confirmation, and MERRY CHRISTMAS! : )
