this has been happening since i set up my system, and i’ve lately just avoided it, but here it is:

my external monitor will show what is on my timeline, but with a constant horizontal roll…and a fast one, that almost makes you dizzy! the monitor is fine when tapes (Beta) are played and capture, but it is only when coming off the timeline that i have this problem. i had originally asked my dealer about this, and their suggestion was, “it might be your deck (a Beta UVW-1800) or it might be your monitor.”

in the meantime, i’ve just not used the monitor and used the canvas screen for a rough idea of how it will all look (and haven’t had a client here for awhile, so i muddled through).

thanks for helping out a bonehead,

How are you setting up the cabling for the monitor? i.e. thru the deck or direct from your capture card or?

[mortimer heathcliff] “i had originally asked my dealer about this, and their suggestion was, “it might be your deck (a Beta UVW-1800) or it might be your monitor.””

That’s a completely useless dealer. I’ve never heard of a deck causing a roll. If it’s the monitor, then your Vertical Roll is not set correctly, though that’s not even an option any more.

Most likely, you have a sync issue somewhere in your video signal that’s causing the roll. Find a real dealer who actually knows how to set up a video editing suite and they should be able to help you.

What kind of capture device do you have and do you have a blackburst generator?

good questions, guys. thanks for the input.

my monitor (an old Commodore 1084s – maybe that’s part of the problem?) is set up with an RCA cord out of my Beta deck…which works fine for TV and when Beta tapes are playing. i’m using a Blackmagic Decklink SD card for i/o between the deck and the G5. no blackburst generator being used.

    thanks.

Is it out of sync when you lay to tape? Do you have reference going from your card to the deck? I usually monitor directly out of my AJA IO using the S-VHS cable. I get a cleaner signal that way. I have my deck going to the “A” input on the monitor, and the IO going to the “B” input. For sync out of the IO, I use the ‘composite out’ going to the ‘Ref. Video’ input on the deck. I reverse it for digitizing from Beta. ‘Composite Out’ from the deck to ‘Ref. Loop’ on the IO.

I’d bet a black burst generator will solve this issue.
And you may wanna upgrade those ancient monitors at some point, no?
