an MXO2 with MAX is what you want. it just screams thru h264 compression, faster then RT even for HD. this should give you a better idea. https://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mac/max/realtime/
FWIW, not only the the MAX encoder faster, the quailty is actually better then the software / apple h264 econder, especially when you get into lower bit rates there is usually no comparison which is way better…. oh and did I say way faster. this is especially true for laptop use.

yes, but you will still need to render. FCP only does RT on exact video frame size. Prem Pro wll do what you want in RT w/o rendering

right. the MAX card works as advertised, and the quality of its output is very good. I’ve been getting 4X-6X faster then RT on a 8 core box. if you are working on a laptop, obviously it would be even faster provided you can keep it fed with video fast enough 🙂
the drivers have been really solid as well and matrox as been really good about pushing out regular updates adding new features.

well I was going to say just transcode the offending clip. OTH Prem Pro edits h264 just fine…. FCP has just become pretty lame and unreliable for work with new formats. I don’t find transcoding acceptable. it really defeats the entire purpose of going tapeless in the first place – saving time.

where are you comparing audio sync ? for example, any video I/O card will have several frames of delay between its own outs and the computer monitor. however, audio should be in perfect sync with the video cards outs.
if you are looking at computer monitor and computer audio out, it should be good.
very first thing to do is trash FCP prefs and it will probably be fixed.
if that fails, the very next thing I would check is the source material. if thats good –
you need to be more specific about your hardware / source materail / what you are doing with the clips on the TL.

consumers pretty much open the box, and turn the LCD on. not much else except maybe a few play with the backlight.
the MXO2 output adjustment on the HDMI can help get more accurate and consistant colors from a consumer level set. the latest consumer sets make pretty nice pix these days, and I’ve looked at some “grade 1” LCD and thought they were flat. sure consumer sets tend to have a bit too much color, but you can easily turn that down on the MXO2 HDMI output. it took minimal fiddling to get my MXO2->HDMI->LCD to match my sony SD CRT

well the very first thing is you should be monitoring your output on a CRT. things like revered fields won’t show up on **most** **nearly** no LCD except a couple of broadcast style ones. you could monitor out of the VTR, or put a mxo onto the display port as another option.

the MAX h264 accelerator is a lot faster & simpler then clusters. I’ve always found OS X compressor / clusters to be flaky and require TLC. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. having a mac accelertor right on the machine is fast & simple without the maintenance, power, heat, noise, configuration jiggling that clusters take. a single MAX is option is like 1/5th the price of a bare bones mac tower, never mind everything required to support that mac box. if you are doing h264 on a daily basis like I am, its a real no brainer to get a MAX option or compress HD card and make you rlife a lot simpler… or you can do it the hard & more expensive way 🙁

well before spending a PENNY on anything for a G5, I think you need to sit back and decide if thats money well spent. if you go to an intel machine, even a 4core used one, its going to run circles around the G5. once you are intel, you should take a hard look at the matrox MXO2’s, especially the LE MAX version. if you are making a lot of h.264’s, the MAX accelerator will make your life a lot better with how fast you can turn them out. they also support every codec out there.
I’d hardly call tape dead. as much as we might like it, its still alive and well. there’s 40+ years worth of material on it ! also direct capture from camera is another use. the MXO2 really shines here because you can put it on a laptop and capture anywhere. so you might well want to again think about if its worth spending anything on a clearly dead machine.
