well I think you need to evaluate your needs better. an 8 core tower is going to be faster then a 2 core notebook, period, especially for HD. its not like I haven’t cut HD on macbook pro’s or even older G4’s. it works but its not the same.
an new imac with a i7 quadcore is an interesting option too as a portablish machine. for getting video out of any of these machines lacking a PCIe power, you can use a MXO on the 2nd monitor port to get real video out for monitors, decks, ect.

your exported mov is most likely ProRes or DVCproHD. if you open it in QT movie player and hit command I you can see what codec it is.
if you turn out a lot of stuff, a matrox compressHD or MXO2+MAX can really speed h.264 compression along by quite a bit, as in faster then real time. that includes flash and youTube versions via compressor or export thru QT movieplayer or FCp QT conversion. worth a look.

3/4″ VTR’s don’t have built in TBC’s. I’ve got a BVT-2000 sitting around which is the matching TBC with 16 lines of memory. uses the multipin connector, 500W…. shipping shouldn’t be too bad on 80lbs or so 🙂

the MXO2 series products make very nice SD upconverts. in fact I had captured some SD material into HD without realizing it, until I went to place it in the FCP TL and it was already the right size 🙂 it looked really good for realtime.

HDcam is 1080i only, and 29.97. if you captured it at 59.94, thats your problem right there.
as for a panasonic VTR, which one ? DVCpro HD ? or D5 ? while 720 transports at 59.94, the actual frame rate can be anything from 1-59.94. standard rates of course are 23.976 and 29.97.
sorry to hear about your problems…. I just don’t go thru these problems with my, ah, MXO2’s 😐

this is really a very expensive way to go.
a MXO2 base model is $1595 which comes with both PCIe tower interface and PCIe/54 laptop interface. it will run on battery power – common 12V. the MXO2 LE is $1k and would work well here.
it takes HD in on analog component, HDMI and HD SDI – another words anything your camera puts out it takes, plus audio. its 10 bit. of course if your camera only puts out 8bit SDI digital, moot point about 10bit. ProRes can be either 8 or 10 bit depending on what you feed it. SDI and HDMI can be either 8 or 10bit depending on your source.
the problem with the IO HD is all the extra compression hits you take every time it goes in and out of the box. can’t avoid it. I don’t like adding extra compression hits for no really good reason.
with the MXO2 series product plugged into a tower, it can capture uncompressed video thru its interface, and compress to ProRes on the CPU. even standard prores should be more then good enough for most key work – assuming decent lighting.
also for the total $10k budget, there was no mention of anything else – like a tripod, audio, ect. I’d say a JVC 700 + MXO2 LE + basic camera support gear should squeak in for about $10k with careful shopping. ….and no one even mentioned lights and CK background.

create a new TL at 29.97 FPS
go to your original TL , select all, copy
go to new TL, Paste
done.
FCP will add 3:2 PD to your 24fps material on the fly, and the 29.97 won’t have frames being dropped which is most likely the source of your play back problems. if you material really is 12 fps… well thats another story all together

just food for thought – if you get the tower, you can continue to use your MXO2 because you have both interfaces – the PCIe for the tower and the PCI/34 for the laptop. both are included in the box, so its a 2 for one deal almost.
yes a tower is a great machine for editing. I could not see using a laptop as my full time only editing machine. it just doesn’t have enough speed or expandability options. however, a tower obviously isn’t as mobile either when you need to do some on location work.
sell your 15″ and get a 17″ with PCIe slot. then you can use the MXO2 series on either machine whenever you need to. if you need to be mobile, you can be.
and if your boss thinks this stuff is expensive, let me show him a couple of $1M edit suites from ah… 1985 or so and he can think about if this stuff is really so expensive ( couple of 1 ” machines wired in glorious composite with a couple channels of ADO, oh and a paint box henry and chyron. now worthless trash…. today’s gear is INSANELY cheap for being all digital 10bit component uncompressed.

well for multi cam editing, yes prores would be a bit easier for the machine to work with. a 4-5 drive array should be way more then fast enough. you could also take a look at the MXO2 since it can cross convert your different formats during capture to a common format like 720. working with one format make things easier too.

the MXO2 and mini and the new LE ( $1k 🙂 ) are all input/output. not sure why you even mentioned the MXO
while its easy to spend other people’s money 😉 the tower is a system you’ll be able to build off of. lots of internal storage, upgrade the graphics card, RAM ect. another words its got a good 5 year life span as a primary machine. OTH the iMac has a much shorter left span as a primary machine, and just doesn’t have the connection options. if they at least where putting a laptop type PCIe34/54 expansion port on it… you’d have some options. since they don’t, you don’t 🙁
