That’s what it’s acting like.
When you go into Options/Preferences/Video – what is your preview RAM and available Preview Ram say?Steve Mann

[Scott Gifford] “My preview ram was automatically set to all the ram available.”
HOLY COW! (ironic metaphor here, isn’t it?)
Preview RAM is unavailable to the render-as processes. Jerry (on the Sony forum) did some tests recently trying to uncover some of the Preview RAM mystery. His results seem to have a sweet spot of 1Gb of preview RAM.

[Axxo Shuffler] ” One day I log on my PC and the memory is at 305/450GB on my OS(C:), then the next day its back down to 270/450GB”
I still think you are confusing memory (RAM) with the hard disk. The hard-disk usage *will* fluctuate by a few Gb from day to day because of all the temporary files that most programs create and delete. In Vegas you need approximately 2X your project size in the %TEMP% folder.
[Axxo Shuffler] ” excellent for both gaming & video editing.”
Ask Santa for another PC. Gaming and Editing are rarely a good mix. Gaming optimizations are built for speed, video editing optimizes for quality.[Axxo Shuffler] ” the rendering issue also occurred on Vegas Pro 10 as well. Right before I switched to Vegas Pro 11 that is .”
Now you have introduced yet another variable. The tone of your OP was that it’s all Version 11’s fault, and now you say the problem developed before you installed Version 11. That says even more that the problem is in your PC and not Vegas.[Axxo Shuffler] ” the video I’ve edited will go black at either 54 or 83%.Sony Vegas Pro 11 will keep running & the counter for when the project will be done rendering will keep ticking down.”
What goes black? Your display the preview window or the finished video?Steve Mann

[Scott Gifford] “Here’s a bit of trivia for you, elapsed time resets to zero after 24 hrs.”
The timer rollover is a known issue, but nothing is effected and very few people ever see “Render As” take over 24-hours. (You are only the second person I’ve heard of seeing it).
However, your system is very similar to mine – right down to the external 1Tb project drive on USB3. Something is wrong here. I enjoy watching my faster-than-real-time encodes and you should be, too.
New Blue and Sapphire edge FX will cause every pixel on every frame to be recomposited and slow your encode – but still, something is wrong here.
Try turning GPU support off.

[Axxo Shuffler] “Windows Vista SP2 Home Premium 64bitOS 4GB RAM”
Vista has to be the second-worst Windows O/S that Microsoft ever released. Windows 7 is by far the best.
[Axxo Shuffler] ” Drives are OS(C:) 280/450GB (tho the memory keeps spiking up and down which is weird) . Recovery(D:) 7.94/14.9GB”
Partitions are not drives. If I read you right then you have only one hard disk. What do you mean that “memory spikes up and down”? Memory has nothing to do with your hard disk drives.
[Axxo Shuffler] “Note that my Adobe After Effects CS5.5/Photoshop & all other editing programs work fine”
Your other programs haven’t just been completely rewritten to access CUDA cores.
[Axxo Shuffler] “upgrading to a new AMD 6900s graphics card soon”
Why? AMD graphics don’t offer CUDA, and Vegas and all plug-ins will want to see CUDA cores. Besides, I’ve nothing but problems with ATI drivers so I can’t recommend anything from ATI.
[Axxo Shuffler] ” but I don’t think my system in general is effecting Sony Vegas cause I’ve been able to use Vegas pro 9/10 for almost 2 years”
See reply #3 above…. Vegas 11 is a major rewrite of the code and it may be asking your PC for something Vegas 9&10 never did.
Back to the original question….
“except when I render a video clip that is 13+ minutes, it will freeze at either 54 or 83%. The screen goes black but the counter keeps ticking when the video will be done, which makes no sense”
Well, which is it? Does it freeze or keep running with a black screen? Suggestions depend on which is happening. I had one system that did something like this for no apparent reason. The screens would go black for 10-seconds and come back on as if everything was normal. The problem went away when I pulled the ATI Radeon card and installed an nVidia GeForce video card (anticipating the need for CUDA cores in Vegas).

That’s they way ripple works. Just turn off ripple if you want to move a single event. (I rarely turn ripple on in my workflow).

Need to know more about your system. How many drives and how much free space? How much RAM?

November 20, 2011 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Video Renders into Pieces instead of one big file? The only limits are the ones imposed by the file system – NTFS can address 16Tb files, which is large enough to hold every DVD title you own in one file.
If the pieces are about 4Gb each then you are using a FAT-32 partition.Steve Mann

November 19, 2011 at 2:36 am in reply to: Can auto ripple work with moving events around on the time line?On the ripple, click on the small down-arrow just to the right of the button and select “All Events”.
[Paul Peck] “**Why does Sony call these events when everyone else in the world calls them clips? A clip is a clip is a clip….”
Everything on the timeline is an event because you can have many copies of an event on the timeline each with the same or different in-out points, but it’s only ONE copy of the media. Other editors, and I am mostly guessing because Vegas is all I’ve used for ten years, actually create copies of the clips just like a film editor. If a film editor wants two copies of a film clip, then he needs to make a copy from the negative. Thus two clips.
Here’s another benefit to the event structure. If you discover that you need to make a minor tweak to, say the white-balance, of a clip that is represented by many events on the timeline. Sure you could go into each event and use event FX to adjust the WB on each event. Or, since all the events on the timeline are just pointers to one copy of the media you just make the adjustment once on the clip in the Project Media window. (It’s properly called a clip in the Project Media window).

[Ahmed abu Jarad] “so that’s it ? I have no other solution other than wait , what is the best and fastest format to render as ?”
Pretty much if you insist on using a two-cylinder engine on a dragster. Honestly, your PC is so underpowered I am surprised that it even finishes the “Render As”.
Since the FX you are using affect every pixel on every frame, the choice of “Render-To” format is really irrelevant. They are all going to crawl.
