Here’s an idea. Post the file and let some of us have a whack at it.
If I want to send a large file, I use Dropbox.

That’s strange. Quicktime Player should play it. VLC Media Player uses its own codecs and it VLC can’t play it, there may be something wrong with the file.

Find the free program “mediainfo” and see what codec the video was made with.

More RAM probably won’t make any difference in your preview quality,BUT, installing more RAM lets you make a bigger Preview Ram in prefs. Then you can preview render (CTRL-B) a larger region.

You can’t render Quicktime H.264 with Vegas, but you can buy Quicktime Pro and render uncompressed MOV out of Vegas and then convert it to H.264 MOV in Quicktime Pro.
Render as:
QT7 (MOV)
Default (uncompressed)
Frame Size – Custom 1440 x 1080, PAR=1.0Open with Quicktime

Google and download “mediainfo” and see what CODEC the file was encoded with.
just a thought – did you have Quicktime installed when you encoded the MP4 and not now?
