Imported some videos from a flash drive and tried to import it into vegas. The file would not import and QuickTime will not play it. I get the following error “Error – 2048: Couldn’t open the file (filename).MOV because it is not a file that QuickTime understands.” This is the only file that I get this error. When I open up the folder in explorer it doesn’t give me a thumbnail of a frame I just get the QuickTime logo. I have tried to play it VLC player and it just makes it crash.

The file size it 1.0 GB. Is it possible the file is too large for a FAT32 formatted flash drive?

    Thanks in advance.

Find the free program “mediainfo” and see what codec the video was made with.

That’s strange. Quicktime Player should play it. VLC Media Player uses its own codecs and it VLC can’t play it, there may be something wrong with the file.

Do you know of any way to repair a corrupt .mov file?

What version of QuickTime are you using?
If it’s an older one, it won;t be able to open newer files.

I have version 7.7.1 (1680.42). Which I believe is the most current version.

Here’s an idea. Post the file and let some of us have a whack at it.

If I want to send a large file, I use Dropbox.

Dropbox is one of those handy inventions where the more you use it, the more you come up with reasons to use it. Dropbox is a cloud-based file sharing service that syncs file across all your computers. It works with files (video, graphics, text, anything) of any size, and it syncs automatically whenever a new file appears or a change is detected. Best of all, it’s free for a 2GB account. Use this link (https://db.tt/KCWoOts) to get your free Dropbox and we both get an additional 250 MB.
