As someone else mentioned, the Phantom is phenomonal – but priced to match:
https://www.visionresearch.com/Products/High-Speed-Cameras/Phantom-HDGOLD/
There is no magic. Slo-mo is subject to the laws of physics. This is why high-speed cameras are called high-speed and come at a high price.
If you want to speed up by, lets say, 100, and the target post-production frame rate is 24 fps, then you need to shoot at roughly 2400 fps. That means each frame needs a shutter speed of a MINIMUM of 1/2400 – but it gets worse, because there is still a finite amount of time needed to process the frame. So, pretty soon you are talking shutter speeds of 1/10000 sec.
Now consider a still shot at 1/10000 . Gonna be pretty dim unless you have arc lights, so you will need a VERY fast lens. Lots of glass. And, you need a sensor to match.

Hi Guillaume;
By the way, I recognize those limestone cliffs from Climbing Magazine! (I used to climb before I became worthless and weak 😉 )
It that Ceuse?
Very beautiful! I still dream of visiting France someday.

Hi Guillaume;
I wan to thank you for posting the raw files! I am considering sending back my Sony NX70 and purchasing a Canon XF100, and was worried that Sony Vegas could not edit them. I downloaded one of them (the hot air balloon AA003301.MXF) and was very happy that I could drag and drop it right into the Vegas timeline with no problem! Canon tech support said it would be impossible.
Question: What mode were you using for the clips? 1080 60i?
I will look at all your clips. So far, my impression of the balloon is that it is not grainy at all compared to the AVCHD compressed files I get from my Sony cams. However, grain and noise will go up in low light, so I will have to look at the rest of your clips . Please stand by.
I hope that you and I can establish a communication channel. I only have a few more days before I have decide to keep or send back my NX70, so time is short. I have a LOT of questions about the XF100!
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Bill;
I’m not in front of my system right now. I had a sort of similar problem with an LG blu-ray burner that was fixed by this:
” …unchecking “Use Legacy Disk Drivers” in “Options/Preferences/CD Settings tab” fixed the problem for me. My LG Blu-ray drive is now seen by Vegas 10e’s “Tools/Burn Disc/Blu-ray Disc” dialog.
I have not tried to actually burn a disc, so I don’t know whether changing that setting fixes one thing and breaks another.”
The “Legacy” drivers are the ones built into Vegas. When the option is unchecked, Vegas passes the API calls to Windows, instead of using its own drivers to talk to the drive.
Worth a shot …

Sounds great, but I my magic money wand is broken and so, for the indefinite future, one computer is all I have.
As an IT pro by trade, I am obsessive about backups, do them about once per week, complete images, along with incrementals. I save the last 5 or so on various media. So, if I do have a system problem, it is easy to go back.

November 8, 2011 at 7:35 pm in reply to: .mp4 files render out with more contrast and darkerHi;
The default color depth for .mp4 in Vegas is 8-bit. I’ve been using 32-bit float recently, and although the render times are longer, I like the results better. The setting is both in the properties for the project and in the Custom for the .mp4 settings.
Not if this will help,just thought I would mention it.

Hi Al;
I have a new Sony HXR-NX70U that is giving me BIG problems (see my recent posts to the Sony NXCAM forums). 99% that I will send it back. I’ve been eying the XF100, but Slashcam says it has poor low-light compared to the NX70.
Also, I just got off the phone with Canon pro support and they flatly stated that Vegas can NOT edit the .xf wrappered Canon files!
So, now I am confused. I’m very nervous about jumping ship from Sony to Canon – for the last 20 years I’ve owned nothing but Sony.
Can you please confirm that you can easily edit and import XF100 files into Vegas 9/10/11 (I have all three)? I’m hoping to be able to drag and drop, they way I do with the AVCHD files from my various Sony cams.
Thanks!
